Top of the BMW sports car range has to be the ultimate BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. Affluent equipment levels, premium features, huge horsepower and lovely driving dynamics ensure that there are few cars quite like a new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe.
Super sleek and with very low lines, the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe looks immense. It has a sweet combination of sensuousness and muscle. This is a true athlete in svelte clothing and perfect for GT duty. You can even get the car with twin glass roofing. Round the back of the car the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is finished with the perfect rear-end design to ensure it remains as sleek and as purposeful as the rest of the car. There are 21 exterior colours to choose from, and various levels of trim and options available for even this magnificent BMW flagship.
Climb inside, and there you’ll find lovely leather trimmings, a smart dash design, and super comfortable seats that easily stay that way for hours out on the road. This is a cockpit you’ll love to be in, and the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe offers a superb touchscreen infotainment system. The system is placed in a nicely laid out centre-dash design with the climate control switches that are nice and easily located below the touchscreen, itself. Accented stitching about the cabin, metallic surrounds – though these can be optionally altered for taste and preferences, a solid build quality, a frameless rear-view mirror, all the driving controls being located in a stylish centre console space surrounding the gear lever, glass surfaces (optional), a crystal gear selector knob (optional), electronic steering wheel adjustment, sports leather seats with electronic adjustments every which way, and there are M Sport levels should you feel the need.
Inside the cabin you have the option of changing the car’s ambient lighting, and at night the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is wonderfully luxurious with its different shades of lighting coming to the fore. As the driver, you’ll get a new BMW digital driver’s display which boasts clear definition and some nice touches you won’t find in a Mercedes, Porsche or Audi equivalent.
The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe gets the latest version of BMW iDrive. You can control the huge central touchscreen display by touch and gesture, voice commands and the swivel dial on the centre console. It’s a beautifully crafted system that works really well, is fast and offers excellent graphics. Online Apps ensure that you can keep up with all the latest news, weather forecasts and best travel routes with the least congestion. Apple CarPlay is standard.
Seated inside the front seats and you get a real impression of just how long the car is. You get a superb view over the long bonnet, and with the low driving position this drive is very special.
Storage space in the front is practical, with reasonable door bins and a good glovebox. The centre console flips its top up to reveal a very decent space for storing gear, and you also get a USBC connection point. Wireless charging for the phone and car key fob as well as a normal USB socket is located in front of the gear lever. And here you’ll also find cup holders for your Latte on the run.
While we’re talking about things practical, the boot space in the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is very good. So, you can fit heaps of luggage in the 8 Series Gran Coupe for that special weekend away for just the two of you – GT style. Although the boot opening is quite narrow, you do have a deep area that goes well back to the rear of the back seats, and hence the excellent luggage capacity. This car has 440 litres of space with the rear seats up. Standard Coupe models have 420 litres. Fold the rear seats down flat, and the space is huge. Tethering points and storage nets are standard. If you do head away with passengers, this is the GT that offers plenty on space and practicality.
So life is simply superb for those in the front seats. Back seat passengers will find life pretty nice as well. The low roofline doesn’t affect headspace on the Gran Coupe like it does in the standard Coupe models, and leg room is much better – even if the driver happens to be tall and long legged. USB connection points and climate controls are offered for rear seat passengers as well. But, you probably won’t be driving this as a family car anyway. The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a GT par excellence. It’s longer than the standard BMW 8 Series Coupe – 231 mm longer overall. And it is this extra length that makes the difference for comfort when sitting in the back seats of this premium model. You also get rear doors to climb aboard the back seats, and I reckon this is the best looking four-door coupe money can buy.
Some very cool features that the Gran Coupe offers are things like the rear wheel steering for great handling and low speed manoeuvrability, the large HeadsUp display that even includes a rev counter, the comprehensive 360 degree camera display on the central dash screen, the safe reversing assist system which has the last 50 meters passed having been memorised, laser headlights (600 meter capability), an active cruise control that is linked to the satellite navigation system, and a Lane Keep Assist system that is possibly the best currently available.
Adaptive dampers are standard, so when comfort is selected you really are riding in a plush four-door GT – a very special experience. Tighten the dampers up and you have a formidable dynamic drive. Getting into the new 8 Series Gran Coupe starts out with 840i Gran Coupe which is powered by the 250 kW/500 Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six. This intoxicating drive has the petrol engine mated to an eight-speed sports automatic with paddle shifters as standard. Dispatching the 0-100 dash in 5.2 seconds ensures this 8 Series Gran Coupe experience remains swift on all accounts.
BMW also offers Australian buyers the 8 Series Gran Coupe with the more expensive M850i xDrive Gran Coupe drivetrain. Under the lengthy bonnet lines of this GT lies a stonking 390 kW/750 Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. AWD with a rear-biased xDrive running with an eight-speed automatic has this M Performance variant claiming a 3.9-second time for the 0-100 km/h sprint.
Yes, a new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe isn’t cheap. But good things never come cheap, and that’s why the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe stands out from the rest of the crowd and has an aura few cars can match. Make no mistake; this car delivers on all accounts GT, all accounts luxury, all accounts driver satisfaction and all accounts style.
