Who’s in for a superbly built and stylish new 2020 BMW Z4? Yes, I see your hand moving! Isn’t it a gorgeous looking Roadster, and as a convertible there are few cars available with the same level of panache and credentials for the same buck.
BMW has completely redesigned the 2020 Z4’s suspension, so now it has a five-link system at the rear for the first time. Lightweight aluminium components and new subframe mounting techniques have been used at both ends of the car, and the front and rear tracks sit wider – a whole 98 mm wider at the front. So the new BMW Z4 isn’t just a pretty face; there are some seriously good new features under this newbies skin. Handling is exciting, flat and grippy – just the way you want it.
The 2020 BMW Z4 offers items like the very good BMW Connected Drive system and a seriously impressive 10.25-inch HD live cockpit display behind the steering wheel. Gorgeous graphics set this one apart and add to the car’s feeling of premium quality. On the new car there is also BMW’s wireless Apple CarPlay with its easy and seamless connection. Smartphone connections and wireless charging ensure that the latest Z4 keeps pace with all the new automotive technologies.
Things like the updated BMW iDrive 7.0 system, a 10.3-inch central touchscreen, the latest “Hey, BMW” voice control system, satellite navigation, digital radio, and vehicle information readouts are all available (and configurable) right at your fingertips as you cruise down the motorway. One-or-two snazzy new features include: the head-up display, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a Harmon Kardon audio system upgrade.
Safety kit for the new Z4 utilizes all the best safety and driver assists like active cruise control, Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant, as well as the very good adaptive suspension. The new Z4 also offers all of BMW’s latest passive and active safety equipment. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rollover protection features are available as standard. If you want more optional safety kit then you’ll be paying a bit more for things like the blind-spot detection system, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign detection, and lane departure warning.
Getting yourself into one of the Z4 cars is easy. The turbocharged BMW Z4 2.0-liter engine model producing 190 kW and 400 Nm has lusty, quick performance right from the word go. Paired to a ZF eight-speed automatic, the recipe delivers a 0-100 km/h sprint time of less than six seconds. One of the nice things about the ZF auto is that you can take over its control of engine power via the paddle shifters. Press the Sport+ button and the 2.0-litre Z4 feels the need for speed even more-so. The 2.0-litre turbo Z4 can top out at an electronically controlled 250 km/h.
So, punchy performance – tick, but it also shines in the fuel consumption figures as well. The BMW Z4’s turbocharged 2.0-liter returns an impressive 9.4 litres/100 km in the city, 7.4 on the highway, and 8.4 combined. To put that in perspective: of all the luxury-badged roadsters on the market today, this 2.0-litre, four-cylinder BMW Z4 is the second most efficient. Second only to the, also very stylish, Alfa Romeo 4C Spider with its tiny, turbocharged 1.7-liter, four-cylinder engine. Porsche, Corvette, Jag and Audi Roadsters end up a bit thirstier in everyday driving.
There will be the “hoons” amongst us that will always want even more power and more speed. Their need for speed is unquenchable and that’s why you can also buy the brand new 2020 BMW Z4 Roadster in M40i guise. Yes, you’ll pay more, but you will also get the creamy power that BMW’s 3.0-litre turbo-petrol six powertrain offers: 250 kW/500 Nm to be precise. This runs you through the 0-100 window in just 4.5 seconds. Of course, the excellent 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six is a gem and delivers a nice crackling sound track to rival the Jaguar F-Type Roadster’s song sheet.
Loads of leather throughout the new Z4 Roadster interior, heated sports seats, dual-zone climate control all make you feel road ready whatever the weather. The M40i Z4 has the M sport rear differential and electronic air diffusers. The new Z4 design is superb and looks sharp with the top down. The drive with the top down is commendably good without too much wind noise (wind deflector in place) and vibration. Boot space is around 280 litres in the Z4 convertible, and the interior space is very good. This is true two-seater roadster and is such a super weekend blast!
