Capable of towing up to 2000 kg and offering a luggage area that spans from 550 litres to 1600 litres, the 2022 BMW X3 SUV is not just about decent performance and a keen drive. A 2.0-litre petrol kicks off the model range, with the X3 M40i petrol engine leading the performance charge. You can even get the 2022 BMW X3 SUV in diesel and PHEV form.
The design lines of the new X3 are more sophisticated, balanced, and cleaner. The front of the car has a simpler design with large angular air intakes as well as the bold as brass kidney grille that’s unmistakably BMW. Inside the cabin, the X3 has plenty of room for carrying the family about in comfort. Five seats are offered, and there is decent leg and head room, though very tall adults may find the rear seats tight. Rear passengers get their own climate control zone with an independent control panel as well as a 12V outlet and two USB-C ports. A 3-way rear backrest split enables a bit of extra load-carrying versatility. BMW’s familiar solid build quality is comforting, and the materials are all high-end, even in the base RWD X3 sDrive 20i.
BMW’s new X3 Wagon/SUV continues to be a great seller for BMW and a strong player among the mid-size SUV fraternity. There are plenty of options for a buyer on the lookout for a new mid-size SUV these days. A new Toyota RAV4, Honda’s CRV, Hyundai’s Santa Fe, Mazda CX-5 and CX-8, and even Kia’s Sorento make excellent spacious and comfortable vehicles for much less money than a BMW. SUVs like these even offer a flagship model for less than a new X3, so BMW has to get all its ducks in a row to keep its loyal fans coming back for more and enticing new buyers into the fold.
So what makes driving the 2022 BMW X3 special? Running with awesome turbocharged engine technology, the 2022 BMW X3 is a fine choice for families seeking a highly capable crossover SUV with mid-level luxuries. Under the bonnet lies a sweet line-up of engines, and the chassis is a superb set-up for smooth, responsive progress. Not a true off-roader at all, the new BMW X3 makes a great tarmac cruiser. Still, it is AWD capable for crossing a muddy field or a light off-road track down to the picnic area. While we can call it a mid-size SUV, the latest BMW X3 is a compact vehicle that offers great technology for parking and navigating heavy traffic situations safely and with confidence. The BMW ConnectedDrive Services also include premium security features.
2022 sees the BMW X3 looking fresh inside, advanced, and still recognizably and comfortingly BMW with its signature BMW styling. The driver’s cockpit always feels a great place to sit, and it is ergonomically comfortable. Memory settings for the front seats are a feature on the new premium BMW X3 models. Rising above the BMW X3’s dashboard is a large 12.3-inch multimedia display screen that has a sleek shape and awesome graphics. Instead of having to tap the large touch screen, the driver can also manipulate the iDrive Controller for accessing the latest iDrive 7.0 platform. BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional set-up occupies a substantial portion of the instrument bay, and there are M Drive, MDM, and M Drivelogic visual tools that enhance the BMW X3 M’s sporty instrument cluster.
The 8-speed transmission is a gem and shifts slickly through the gates. The sports automatic transmission is a system that has been tuned for dynamic, efficient driving. One of the big changes for 2022 sees the BMW X3 with the inclusion of the 30e plug-in hybrid variant. This is a class leading PHEV. The PHEV X3 pairs the standard BMW 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a relatively powerful electric motor integrated into its eight-speed automatic transmission. On its own, the engine produces 135 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque. Add the electric motor into the mix with its 80 kW/265 Nm, and, when working together, the electrified boost gives a total of 215 kW and 420 Nm, allowing for a 0-100 km/h sprint time to be performed in 6.1 seconds.
Any of the engines deliver top blend of performance. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in the base model 20i offers 135 kW of power and 290 Nm of torque. 140 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque is provided in the efficient 20d diesel version. Then the creamy smooth 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol motor in the 30i has a rather peppy 185 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque to play with. The 30i is a lovely drive! Then, BMW offers the 30d diesel variant, which is equally as delicious to drive with a massive flow of torque on tap and high energy delivery of power. This version boasts 195 kW and 620 Nm. Topping the BMW X3 SUV performance ladder is the 285 kW/500 Nm M40i, which can run the 0-100 km/h dash in around 5 seconds.
The 2022 BMW X3 is available in some pretty special colours, such as the striking Tanzanite Blue II, Toronto Red, and even the bright Sao Paulo Yellow. Drivers after more subtlety will prefer the Brooklyn Grey, Carbon Black or Dark Graphite colours. Interior upholstery colours offer smart conventional greys and blacks or bright colours such as Sakkhir Orange or the Midland Beige contrast stitching. Carbon Fibre, Piano Black, Smoke Grey Aluminium and Pearl Chrome trimmings are also available. 2022 has the BMW X3’s standard 19-inch alloy wheels including a Y-shaped design and Ferric Grey accents. Shadowline trimming on the roof rails and other exterior sections look great on the latest X3 shape. Quad tailpipes and a rear spoiler reveal the aggressive nature of the high-end X3 M trim levels.
