Don’t be thinking that hybrid cars are boring. Gone are the days of just the Honda Insight or Toyota Prius as being the main players for this type of car. 2022 has many hybrid options from many different automotive manufacturers. Hybrids make a lot of sense because they are a natural progression towards the new EV world. BMW have their own hybrid models in the line-up, one of which is the new BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport SUV, and it’s definitely not your average hybrid machine.
The new BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport SUV comes in a variety of very cool colours: carbon black, phytonic blue, sophisto grey, Brooklyn grey, mineral white and alpine white. Being a new Beemer, the hybrid X3 is impeccably well-built and engineered, drives with verve, and has a number of decent practical features to go along with five-star safety and right up-to-date technology.
To power the new BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport SUV, a 2.0-litre Turbo petrol engine combines with electric motors to produce a healthy 215 kW and 300 Nm of torque. A smooth 8-speed automatic delivers power to the RWD biased AWD system. Having 4×4 capabilities is a handy feature when you want to explore off the beaten track. The BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport SUV runs on 95 octane premium unleaded fuel and certainly has some get up and go when you need it.
BMW have long been benchmark setters and one of the main go-to manufacturers for the driving enthusiast, so you won’t be disappointed with the 6.5 seconds it takes to sprint through the 0-100 km/h dash, nor will you feel deflated in the sporty SUV’s handling ability. The sporty BMW X3 xDrive30e M holds its lines beautifully through a quick set of tight corners, and never feels short of composure or grip. Stopping ability is always strong and there are also clever accident avoidance systems working in your favour. Should the worst happen, and a truck appear out of nowhere or a wall, then the BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport SUV comes with a full five-star safety badge and an extremely solid safety cage.
According to BMW, if you drive the new X3 xDrive30e M sport SUV in the city, you might get down to an impressively low 3.2 litres/100 km fuel consumption. Shake your bootie out on the open roads, and you’ll likely see fuel consumption figures climb to a more typical ICE 8.5–9.0 litres/100 km, but that’s still pretty decent. BMW promises the new car buyer are 3-year/unlimited km warranty along a 3-year roadside assistance package.
Also, the new BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport Hybrid SUV is a pretty practical one, with seats that are roomy and comfortable for all. Front seats get adjustable bolsters, while the driver enjoys electric lumbar support and memory functions. The seats are also heated. Back seat space is good and offers a split-fold ability for extending boot space out for longer items or just more cargo. The tailgate is powered, so it’s a hands free job, and you can even tow a 2000 kg braked or 750 kg unbraked trailer if you need to take the family dog and its kennel with you on the holiday.
In terms of usable space, the BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport Hybrid SUV gets plenty of storage compartments and a decent luggage capacity (450–1500 litres). There are bottle holders in 1st and 2nd rows. Cargo tie-down hooks and rings are found in the boot space along with cargo tie-down rails. A charcoal filter reduces interior odours for when Dad or the dog farts. Cup holders are present front and rear. A nice set of BMW floor mats, footwell lamps, driver and front passenger illuminated vanity mirrors, map/reading lamps 1st and 2nd rows, seatback pockets, a big centre console storage compartment, and a starter button to make life easy are all present and accounted for.
Loads of tech and handy features are part of the Hybrid SUV’s way of life, so things like aux-input points, USB sockets, an inbuilt hard disk drive, an MP3 decoder, Bluetooth, a multi-function control screen, a CD player with a digital radio receiver (DAB+), a grunty six-speaker stereo system, a digital driver’s instrument display, GPS, a head-up information display, an on-board computer, a speed limiter, a speed zone reminder with road sign recognition, ambient lighting, multi-zone climate control, and voice recognition are all standard.
Interior styling has the new X3 xDrive30e M sport looking snazzy and premium, and it should do with a price tag of over $100k. While the hybrid model hasn’t officially been tested, some of its unlucky siblings have been run into a stationary wall to see how safe they are. The answer? Well, very safe – 5-star in fact.
Safety items include ABS, electronic stability and traction control, alert/warning for forward collisions, blind spot sensors, blind spot with active assist, a brake emergency display, hazard/stoplights, a front camera, a side camera, collision mitigation, crash avoidance control with braking, pedestrian avoidance control with braking, cross traffic alert, a first aid kit, lane departure warning with passive steer assist, hill descent control, active cornering, automatic headlights that are light sensitive, headlamps with high beam active shadowing, high beam auto dipping, and LED technology.
Standard BMW X3 xDrive30e M sport alloys look nice on this SUV, although there are many options available – 19-inch, 20-inch, and even 21-inch alloy wheels and designs. Other options include things like active seat ventilation, an executive package to luxuriate the interior even more. You can also play around with the body kit and exterior styling to suit your own tastes – for instance have a black grille, black window surrounds, M sport brakes with a red high-gloss paint, and special metallic exterior paintwork. Another couple of options would be a panorama glass sunroof or a special rear seat comfort package with heated reclining rear seats.
Do I like Hybrid vehicles? Yes, I do. I think they are the best way forward at the present time, particularly when a fully functional recharging infrastructure right around Australia is still some way off. Hybrids make a lot of sense when you spend a lot of time commuting around town and in the city, where the electric emission-free powertrain can do a lot of the hard yards on its own. Then, when adventure calls, you can head out beyond the urban jungle under ICE power, knowing yo can still fill up with petrol to get you about.
