2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe

BMW 2 series side view in purple.

It’s been a while since the BMW 2 Series has been reviewed, but the 2024 Coupe is all go!  Arguably the best of its type (small coupe) on the planet, the 2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe is awesome to drive and refined, and can be as quick as you want it to be.  If you need more leg space, then slip through the doors to the 4 Series coupe’s showroom, and you should find what you’re looking for here.  And that’s the great thing about BMW: there is a car for everyone.

Though the rear seats in the new BMW 2 Series Coupe might be a bit cramped for taller folk, you can try before you buy and see if this is going to negate the whole car for you.  I just love the package, though.  You’re going to love the way this small BMW Coupe rides and handles.  This is one car that loves to be flicked through the corners and slung down the straights.  Being a BMW, the car is impeccably well-built and bolted together, so the feel of quality and engineering shines through from the engine, the chassis, the connection with the road, the ride quality, the interior materials, and the fit and finish.

What are the 2 Series Coupe models you can buy?  Well, there are just the two, actually.

The 2024 Coupe kicks off with the BMW 230i M Sport Coupe.  This is rear-wheel drive, has an eight-speed automatic gearbox to toast the rubber, and boasts an athletic 2.0-litre turbo motor with 190 kW of power and up to 400 Nm of torque.  This is enough grunt to get you from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h.  BMW says that the combined fuel economy for this model is 6.4 litres/100 km/h – pretty good really.  However, 98 octane petrol is needed for this performance engine.  And if the truth be made known, this isn’t that much slower than the xDrive version, and it might be the best way to get yourself into the BMW performance model family.

The other coupe model is the M240i xDrive.  On-demand 4WD has this racy coupé hugging the road in all weather conditions and over all road types.  I reckon this would be a really successful rally car for BMW if they wanted to try their hand at this type of motorsport.  It would be sure to give the successful Hyundai i30N and Toyota Yaris a run for their money!  In road-going form, this delightful car can see off the 0–100 km/k dash in 4.3 seconds.  Mind you, there is 285 kW on tap as well as a stonking hot 500 Nm of torque at the ready.  Boasting six cylinders all lined up in a straight line, the legendary BMW 3.0-litre turbo engine is silky smooth and drips power from anywhere in the revs.  The Steptronic sports automatic gearbox is loaded with eight gears for getting the power out onto the road.  This car feels quick and agile, and loves to be driven hard.  That said, it is one of the select performance cars that can happily toddle off to kindergarten to pick up the kids or run down town to the supermarket to grab the shopping.

Of course, the car is a BMW, so it does come loaded with all the latest technology, some of which ticks the right boxes but will never see the light of day.  A ten-speaker stereo, two-zone climate control, active cruise control, parking assist, EBD, ABS, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto… these are all there.  These new coupés come with a 5-star safety tick, so the list of features that the car has to get this awarded is too long to mention them all.

Having been put through the designer’s office and had a bit of a flick of the artist’s pen, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe has had some new work done at the back end, where the taillights are slimmer and, I think, a lot more attractive than the raw looks of its predecessor. Air foils around the rear corners, big wide exhausts tucked in under the sleek rear bumper, and a subtle boot spoiler all make this German coupé a thing of beauty.  Being one of the smaller BMWs offered in 2024, the new 2 Series Coupe delivers great balance and poise in its design and make-up, making it one of the best-looking BMW models you can buy.  The proportions are right, and it looks built for speed even before it gets off the mark.  A deep and aggressive front air dam along with the large and imposing BMW kidney grille has this coupé ready for some on-track mayhem.  Down both sides of the car is a pronounced but gentle side skirt that brings the whole design together.  It’s all a bit of coupé heaven!

2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe interior

Climb aboard and you know you’ve arrived.  The 2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe has had a freshen up inside the cabin, with the 2024 dash, steering wheel, and instrumentation all giving this car a very purposeful design that meets you the moment you sink into the snug front seats that announce that this ride could be quick.  Distinctly BMW, with the familiar gear lever and centre console remaining the same as it’s been for a while, the match up of the new and the old is elegant and delightful.  The new 14.9-inch digital driver’s display looks great, with the speedo on the left winding like a capital ‘C’ right through to 260 km/h.  On the right is the reverse ‘C’ that has the engine revs lighting up this curve.  These two Cs surround the digital dash space in the middle, where you can have the driver’s information for the car’s set-up, various driving modes, the driving range till empty, the time, seat belt reminders, gear selection, satellite navigation, and so forth all there and on tap for the driver to see as required.

Boot space is pretty good, considering that this is a compact sports coupé.  Open the lid and the 390-litre space is very accommodating for a couple of suitcases or what have you.  Of course, the rear seats are split-folding, so if you need to put through longer items or shift house, then the rear seats can become decent luggage space when the need arises.

All in all, the compactness of the new 2 Series is actually what gives this car a special flavour, an attraction you just can’t find in any of the bigger Beemers.  Fun to drive and very well made; yep, I like it!
