Having been sweetened up and kitted out with all the latest new technology, BMW’s two-seater sports/luxury convertible recipe for open-top motoring is made that much easier to buy into. This is a great car to drive, and with two performance levels available in Australia for the 2024 Z4, one of them is sure to play the right tune for you.
With no further ado, the two 2024 BMW Z4 convertibles available for you in 2024 are the BMW Z4 sDrive 20i M Sport and the BMW Z4 M40i. While they both deliver a wonderful roof-down driving experience, the M40i is undoubtedly the show-off of the two siblings. There is always the sensible one in two closely matched siblings; this would have to be the sDrive 20i M Sport. On paper, the 20i’s power stats are well down on bigger brother M40i’s 285 kW/540 Nm sum, but the reality is that you can very smartly put the 20i’s 145 kW/320 Nm out to the rubber on the road via the sweet RWD platform. The 20i version is still a fun drive, making the price tag all the more appealing against the fee that a new M40i demands. The 20i Z4 convertible can still run with the big boys thanks to the 2.0-litre turbo boasting a 0–100 km/h sprint time of only 6.6 seconds and topping out at 240 km/h. With the running the power through a slick-shifting 8-speed sports automatic gearbox and sitting on an M Sport suspension that doesn’t feel too stiff, the sDrive 20i M Sport is a delightfully fun and balanced car to drive. Boasting plenty of grip, the car happily zips around corners and runs like it’s on rails. The ride is more comfortable than you may think; not quite as firm or as hard as its other performance open-top competitors, but that just makes it even more appealing to live with on a daily basis, and will likely be the one you’ll want to be driving on a long haul.
When it comes to the Z4 M40i’s stunning style and seriously quick performance, you never feel short-changed. BMW say that the 2024 Z4 M40i model can hustle through the 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.1 seconds, running on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h. But again, the suspension can be set to being comfortable enough to cruise about town without jolting you around over potholes, and it’s still quiet enough to have a conversation with your passenger while running the open road leg of the journey. Open up the twin-turbo 3.0-litre motor with the top down, and both you and your passenger will be grinning from ear to ear as the growl emanates out the back end and the power sends you firmly back in your seat.
Inside the new Z4 cars you’ll find a 10-speaker sound system; Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; Bluetoothing connections for compatible devices; and Smart device app connection, display and control. The car comes with voice recognition, active cruise control, two-zone climate control, and keyless entry and start. A digital driver’s display, a central touchscreen for the infotainment features, GPS satellite navigation, a heads-up information display, interior wind deflectors, a powered soft roof, and sweet-looking 18- or 19-inch alloys are just the beginning.
Beautifully crafted, supportive, and comfortable leather seats are part of the Z4’s likable experience, and these are electronically adjustable with the tilt and reach adjustability of the leather-wrapped steering wheel. You have a wonderfully raw and natural driving experience when you look out over the Z4’s long bonnet as you rocket down the motorway with the soft top down and the smell of sea salt in the air. Both Z4s are made for effortlessly cruising at high speeds, and they never feel stressed doing it. BMW’s infotainment system is very nice, and you get a 10.0-inch touchscreen on the dashboard and a 12.0-inch display in behind the steering wheel. The cabin is plush and feels very upmarket and full of quality touches.
When the Z4 was tested back in 2019, it scored the full five out of five stars in Euro NCAP safety testing. The Z4 came away with a very high 97% rating for adult occupant protection and 91% in the vulnerable road user section. The 2024 BMW Z4s come with the latest crash avoidance technology upgrades, so things like emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot assist, fixed rollover protection, cross-traffic alert, front and side airbags, ABS, traction control, fully automated park assistance, and even a first aid kit are all there. Also present are some useful cubby holes, with narrow door bins, a small space beneath the dashboard to charge your phone, and the armrest has a couple of cupholders. There is also 281 litres of luggage space, regardless of whether the roof is up or down, so that’s plenty spacious for a weekend away for two. You can also lay down a set of golf clubs in the boot should you want to show Tiger how it’s done.
If you just want one of the nicest driving convertibles, you will understand the 2024 BMW Z4’s recipe and go back for seconds again and again. There might be quicker convertibles in the Z4 class, but they just won’t do it as nicely.
