Standing tall amid a world of tough utes is the rugged new Great Wall Ute. It’s called the Steed and looks mighty fine parked up against the best of them. With its commanding on road presence you can be proud strutting about in one of the range of new Great Walls in 2020.
You can buy a Steed in Single Cab or Double Cab and, with a diesel and petrol to choose from, the bases are covered pretty well when you consider that they can come with a decent 4×4 underpinning. Mated to six-speed manual gearboxes, the 4×4 combination is a proven workhorse that is relatively frugal – particularly in diesel form. A petrol 4X2, 5-speed manual, Double Cab is also offered.
Great pricing is an aspect that the 2020 Great Wall Steed 4×4 ute has as a trick up its sleeve. There are few utes that can match it for value. The Foton Tunland is another easy-on-the-eye ute from China that has similar credentials for a similar price. I might add here, that a new LDV T60, though slightly pricier than the Steed, but not by much, is a very well built ute that delivers 5-star safety and has big spec as well, and it might be the one to go for. It’s also Chinese designed and built. The big gamers like the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton and Isuzu D-Max are all proven in their field and deliver in spades but are also much more expensive than a new Great Wall ute is to buy.
They don’t make a mad amount of torque, but for their size the new Great Wall Steed Diesel 4×4 and 4X2 Utes pack 310 Nm from nice-and-low in the rev range, while the six-speed manual gearbox makes great use of the muscle on offer. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel pulls away happily and is nice and refined out on the open road. There is plenty of go when you need it, too. With 110 kW, the blend of low-cost motoring and power is a good one. You can expect to get around 9-litres/100 km, on average, when driving the diesel versions.
Under the hood of the petrol Great Wall Utes is a 2.4-litre with 100 kW. A decent 205 Nm of torque is adequate for getting everyday tasks done; and if all you’re doing is puttering around on the farm and then ducking into town every now and then to pick up supplies this works very nicely indeed in the Steed. It would make a great builder’s ute, too. The 2.4-litre petrol engine uses Delphi electronic ignition to deliver smooth performance. It is only available in 4×2 and is matched to a five-speed manual transmission. A one tonne payload, a huge cargo area and the dual cab practicality means you’re sorted for anything other than towing a big rig.
If you require a Steed for getting off-road, then the 4×4 versions are the ones to go for. The Steed Dual Cab is designed to handle the toughest conditions, with its strong construction and ladder frame chassis. It’s a good performer off-road, where the capable diesel engine, six-speed transmission with low range 4×4 gearing and the 171 mm ground clearance ensures that you can get down and dirty. The 4×4 Dual Cab provides generous approach and departure angles, while the BorgWarner torque on-demand transfer case combines great traction and power delivery. This is all the Steed you’ll need for off-road excursions.
Once on the go, the Great Wall Steed is sure footed and predictable, loaded or not. Like any tough Ute, having a little on the back settles things down nicely for a grippy, balanced ride. These are not sports cars, and once that’s accepted what you get is a very user-friendly, communicative drive that’s pleasant on all accounts.
Interior comfort is good. There is plenty of adjustment in the seats and steering wheel to get comfortable. Every Great Wall Steed Dual Cab comes standard with Comfort-Tek seats all round, including heated seats for the driver and front passenger. The electric driver’s seat and four-way adjustable steering wheel combine to provide a great driving position. A soft touch leather steering wheel is both stylish and functional and integrates multiple functions including cruise control, bluetooth, and audio control. The dash controls are nice and simple to use.
Enter the Single Cab, and here it uses a tough ladder frame chassis and has a 1 tonne payload. The Steed Single Cab can tow up to 1700 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked. The Great Wall Steed Single Cab has all the essentials in place, so you have air-conditioning, a leather steering wheel, electric windows, central locking, ABS and Bosch ESP, and tyre pressure monitoring are just a few of the features. Hill Hold Control is a nice addition where the system briefly stops the ute rolling back on hills as you take off. You even get a fancy self-dimming rear view mirror to reduce night time glare. Bluetooth is an optional extra, but well worth the small outlay to purchase it.
A five-year/150,000 km warranty is an awesome back-up and definitely speaks volumes for peace-of-mind, confident Ute buying. Every Great Wall Dual Cab comes fully loaded with side steps, climate control air-conditioning, a bed liner, sports bar, reverse parking sensors, heated front seats, and an electric driver’s seat. You’ll also get auto headlights and wipers; front, side and curtain airbags, Bosch ESP, a tyre pressure monitoring system and rear ISOFIX points for the smalls. Some options you might like to add to your new Steed could be a tow Bar, tonneau cover, nudge bar, bonnet protector and weather shields.
Value for money has the 2020 Great Wall Utes standing proud in their field. And, there is talk that an EV Steed is on the way, so keep your eyes open for that. The 2020 Great Wall Steeds include the:
