You might not be aware, but the 2021 Jeep Cherokee fits the mould of the likes of a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. How can that be, I hear you ask? Well, it’s more in the Cherokee’s dimensions. The Jeep Cherokee is, in actual fact, smaller than a Jeep Grand Cherokee, so therein lies the answer. If you want the larger and more expensive top of the range Jeep, then go for the Grand Cherokee; otherwise the smaller Cherokee offers typical Jeep off-roading ability mixed with comfort and practicality.
Climb on-board any of the 2021 Cherokee models, and you’ll find that the seating comfort is very good, handy storage compartments are aplenty and there are all the nice features like electric windows, air-conditioning, Bluetooth connections, USB points and quality audio sound systems. Top of the range Jeep Cherokees offer leather seats and climate control, a nice big central touchscreen, Bluetooth compatibility and parking sensors.
Fit-and-finish are good, however one might suggest that it’s off the pace of the main European rivals who make SUVs of similar size to the Jeep Cherokee. Leather-trimmed power seats and satellite navigation are standard on the Limited and Trailhawk models. The S Limited gains a sunroof and larger 19-inch alloy wheels.
However, you really can’t overlook the agreeable comfortable cabin that delivers plenty of bang for your buck and plenty of space in spades! You do have available comfortable seating for five large adults as well as 591 litres of luggage space behind the back seats. Alternatively, if you slide the rear bench forwards, albeit reducing the space for passengers, you can expand the boot space to 714 litres. That 714 litres is enormous, making this a pretty useful family car; I’m thinking Mum, Dad and the three youngsters in the back seats with a dog and 2 tricycles in the boot – along with the picnic basket, the kite, the volleyball set and the drone. You get the picture! The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is a perfect match for the growing family.
As with most family-orientated outings there will likely be water, mud and sightseeing. This is where the new Cherokee shines again. Front-wheel-drive only versions of the Cherokee are available, but I don’t get that, since I’ve always related a Jeep with 4×4 proficiency. However, if a FWD Jeep Cherokee is all you need, then by all means enjoy the excellent practicality that the vehicle will offer you. Personally, I would opt for the 4WD Jeep Cherokee, which can tackle a rutted muddy gully with ease. A 2021 4WD Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk will more than keep up with the best Range Rovers.
The new Cherokee SUV comes in FWD for the Sport model and then AWD for the Limited, Trailhawk and S-Limited variants. At the business end of the vehicle you’ll have either a powerful 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine or a smooth 2.4-litre petrol for getting the job done. The 2.4-litre motor is used in the Sport model and is a four-cylinder 130 kW/229 Nm powerplant that feels responsive and well-matched for the FWD design. The bigger 3.2-litre V6 offers loads of grunt in the form of 200 kW of power and 315 Nm of torque. This engine is matched with the on-demand AWD system on the Limited, S-Limited and Trailhawk models. The nine-speed automatic gearbox is standard right across the range and is a superb box with a smooth action.
The fully off-road-ready Trailhawk model boasts a 4×4 dual-range off-road capable system with a locking rear-diff included. Buy a Trailhawk, and you’re sure to enjoy its go-anywhere capability. Just to give you an idea, the Trailhawk also has an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a full-size spare tire, red tow hooks, a matte-black hood decal, an off-road suspension that increases the ride height, and 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. Now that sounds a rather delectable combination!
Out on the road the 2021 Cherokee plants itself nicely down on the tarmac. There is a bit of roll in the corners when you start to push it, however the Cherokee feels solid and safe, brakes consistently and is enjoyable for cruising long distances. The Cherokee is good for towing up to 2.2 tonnes.
Peace of mind counts for a lot, and when you buy one of these later versions of the Jeep Cherokee you are buying a safe SUV. In fact, as far back as 2013, the Cherokee won Best in Class for small off-road 4x4s with a full five star array in Euro NCAP crash tests. A 2021 Jeep Cherokee boasts nine airbags, stability control, seatbelt reminders for all five seats, a special driver speed warning system, active cruise control high and low-speed autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian avoidance, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring. That’s not the end of the safety list but really just the beginning.
Do take a look at the nice range of 2021 Jeep Cherokees available at your local Jeep dealer. Even if you are thinking along the lines of a Subaru Outback, or even a RAV4, CR-V or Pathfinder, get yourself down to check out a new Cherokee because the space, comfort, safety and off-road ability might be just the thing you’re needing. The range starts at a little over $50k and comes with a 5 year/100,000 km warranty and five years of roadside assistance when you buy new.
