Jeep’s smartened up Compass is classed as a roomy, medium-sized SUV. It comes with a fresh look that is quite attractive, even more so when it’s at the curb in front of you rather than on paper. Underpinnings are a winning Jeep combination of comfort when it matters and core 4X4 Jeep technology to get you into and out of all sorts of sticky situations off the road. Then there is the updated state-of-the art safety kit onboard these 2021 models, along with some pretty nice in-cabin comfort and infotainment features. All of this comes in the keenly priced 2021 Jeep Compass range.
Five models of the new Jeep Compass are available. For around $43k you can get yourself into the base model Jeep Compass Launch Edition, which is a stylish model that has FWD, a six-speed automatic and comfortable cloth seats. As the driver, you’ll enjoy electric lumbar support. GPS satellite navigation comes as standard, and you’ll enjoy a rocking six-speaker stereo with digital radio. You get an Aux Input, USB sockets, Bluetooth connections, a coloured multi-function control screen and a digital driver’s display. Voice recognition is a function on this model, while things like ambient lighting, a cargo cover, cargo tie down hooks, 2-zone climate control, distance control, entry/exit lighting with fade, illuminated vanity mirrors for those in the front seats, keyless start and a key fob that is proximity related, a starter button and even some handy storage is available under the passenger seats. Not bad for a base model!
How about the safety at first base? ABS, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, collision forward alert, six airbags, blind spot sensors, crash avoidance with braking at high and low speeds, pedestrian avoidance with braking, cross traffic alert at the rear, active lane keeping assist, parking assistance with a nice graphical display, a driver fatigue warning system, a hill holder, rollover stability, trailer sway control, a rear camera with park distance control, automatic (light sensitive) headlights with electric level adjustment, automatic high beam dip, a speed limiter, a speed zone reminder with road sign recognition and a tyre pressure monitoring system are some of the goodies onboard even base model 2021 Jeep Compass models. All models boast ANCAP five-star safety, so this is a safe medium-size SUV for the family.
If you want more kit, then the other four models boast leather interiors. The S-Limited is loaded; and I mean loaded! A 9-speaker sound system with a sub-woofer produces superb audio, and there is front and rear park assist and control, hill descent control, electronic front seats with memory functions and heat, and a powered tailgate to name a few of the goodies. Limited and S-Limited Jeep Compass models have on-demand AWD and, like the Launch Edition and 80th Anniversary Edition are powered by the familiar 129 kW 2.4-litre “Tigershark” petrol engine that puts out 229 Nm of torque.
Serious off-roading enthusiasts will love the Jeep Compass “Trail Rated” Trailhawk model that has a nine-speed automatic Dual Range gearbox with Jeep’s Active Drive Low 4×4 system. This will take you anywhere Outback. Using an excellent 125 kW/350 Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel motor, this is my favourite Compass of the five offered. The diesel-donk is remarkably efficient and equal to any of the tasks that you can think to ask of it. You will commonly see 6 litres/100 km or less of fuel usage, and the engine can happily eat up the miles when cruising the motorway.
A Mazda CX-5 is possibly a little more refined, the Renault Koleos a little more out there, the Haval H6 very good, and the Skoda Kamiq very spacious, but the Jeep Compass has the edge in my book, particularly when safety, interior conveniences, price and off-roading is concerned. Good on you Jeep!
