Here is the real deal; and it’s the best Kia Sorento to date. This is a lovely, friendly seven-seater SUV with premium safety, stacks of space and a rather nice cabin arrangement for its occupants to do time on the road.
Sit yourself down in a 2020 Kia Sorento’s driver’s seat, and the comfort levels and practicality are superb. A huge centre console will swallow loads of stuff to keep the cabin tidy. Large door bins carry bottles and more with ease. The glove box is big, while there is also some space for phones to charge wirelessly. One of the likable features about the classy Sorento dash design is that the materials around the dash are really soft and tactile; the accented stitching also looks really classy.
There are different models that you can buy, with the premium models being classy drives loaded with kit. You get leather seats, heated seats, a leather steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, an 8-inch infotainment screen with classy HD graphics and shortcut buttons, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Premium models also get things like an automated tail gate, a powered glass roof, zoned climate control, wireless charging and connections for your mobile phone and a top of the range Harman Kardon stereo package – to name a few.
Kia offer the Sorento in a Black Edition which looks very cool with tinted windows, black exterior, big alloys and black leather with wood trim.
A glass roof can be fitted, making the Sorento’s cabin lovely and light. Head room is good, though with the glass roof present there are a few centimetres shaved off the head space which would only be an issue for taller people (over six foot). Otherwise space in the second row is superbly comfortable – including head space, leg room and bum comfort. Middle seat passengers in the second row have a completely flat floor, so this is one of the better middle seats, second row for any vehicle you can buy. The second row base can be slid forward-and-back, while the reclining capacity of the second row is brilliant – the angle of the back rest being capable of reclining well back – just like in a limo.
Access into the third row seating is done via the curb-side rear door only – think safety for the kids here. The entry gap is good for adults. And, the good news is that even adults will have a decent third row seat should they require a seat in the third row. Even those in the third row have zoned air-conditioning controls and storage space for drinks and mobile phones. Big door bins front and rear ensure you get a very practical, large and luxurious SUV – no doubt about it! Head around to the boot and things are all fine and dandy here. Once the powered boot opens up (premium models), you have great access to the luggage space. With third row seats up the boot space is not huge, however that is to be expected. You can grab yourself one of the large roof pods to carry more luggage, or with the fine engines on offer you can even tow a trailer if you are fully laden with people and are heading away out of town. Flip those split folding third row seats down flat, and then the Sorento packs huge amounts of luggage space. Split fold second row seats can also be folded flat to create cargo carrying ability equivalent to a van.
A six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic are the options for the likable Kia Sorento. Manual versions can tow up to 2.5 tonnes, while automatic versions tow up to 2 tonnes. The good news continues: all Kia Sorentos can head off-road thanks to hill descent control, decent ground clearance, decent entry and exit angles, and 4WD with central diff locking.
A 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine will likely be the most popular one to go for. It has decent power output and masses of torque to get this thing moving along very nicely. To give you an idea, the modern diesel donk in auto form will shift the Sorento from a standstill to 100 km/h in less than ten seconds.
Petrol versions use the 3.5-litre, V6 Kia engine with loads of punchy, smooth performance.
On the road the 2020 Kia Sorento rides very well, all the time feeling solid and safe. The suspension smooths out all the undulations nicely, and being a large SUV you really do feel secure in something like this. There are sportier vehicles to drive – but that’s not likely to bother most people who appreciate the Sorento’s ability to eat up the miles in premium comfort on and off the road.
A new Kia Sorento SUV delivers on all accounts practical, and on all accounts to do with comfort and well-being for seven adults. This is a great choice for those on the lookout for a new 2020 large SUV boasting a seven year/unlimited km warranty. And just for the head-up, the next Sorento model is just around the corner, so we’ll keep you posted on that one.
