It’s hard not to be wowed by the Kia EV6. It is a modern artwork on wheels that looks amazing from all angles. The big rear haunches, solid waistline and short drooping nose give it a real sense that the new EV6 means business. There are all sorts of nice curves, lines, and edges that play nicely with the car’s smooth exterior finish and design. I reckon Kia’s latest EV is a gem; it delivers on style, delivers on technology, and delivers on a great driving experience.
Climb inside a new EV6, and Kia’s team has again delivered a super stylish package with lovely textures and materials, interior lighting, and comfortable seats. The screens display at a lovely clarity and they have an anti-glare surface that allows you to read the display easily when the sun shines directly on it. Apparently, the seats are made from recycled bottles, which is a great win for the environment and kudos to Kia for making them look and feel so good. As far as driver comfort goes, Kia have done very well in this department, the EV6 is easy to get comfortable behind the steering wheel whatever your shape, and the steering wheel has a pleasant texture that sits sweetly in your hand.
All the clever new tech is onboard the 2022 Kia EV6, so you’ll find voice memory and control, smartphone connection, wireless charging, satellite navigation, climate control, digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, active cruise control, USB and USBC ports, heated seats, and more. Drivers will enjoy the expansive digital driver’s display, which you can toggle through various bits of information about the car’s status, your journey, and so forth to keep you in touch with progress. A full 360 degree camera delivers a premium high definition visual of the surrounding area around the car, and you also get a handy superimpose feature on the big screen for navigating directions in real time.
Practicality in the Kia EV6 is impressive as well, thanks aplenty to the fact that the car is an electric car or electric vehicle (EV) as is the commonly used term. So, you’ll enjoy plenty of cup and bottle holders, a huge glovebox, and plenty of interior storage space – even below and between the front seats. Hop into the back seats and the space is truly colossal; there is really so much knee space behind the front seats, and the floor is completely flat for all three pairs of occupant’s feet to position themselves nice and spaciously flat on the floor. You can also recline the rear seats as well. USB charging ports are present for rear seat passengers to use their electronic devices.
An electrically operated tailgate opens up to expose 490 litres behind the back seats. The new Kia EV6’s boot is a useful size, and it boasts a variable-height floor. The new Kia EV6 cars also benefit from a 20-litre storage compartment under the bonnet. You can fold the rear seats down flat if you want some more cargo space, which gives you a total of 1300. 12 V sockets, storage nets, and quick release levers for folding the rear seats down are convenient features you’ll find in the boot. Yes, you can tow a trailer with the new EV6: 750 kg unbraked or 1600 braked.
What’s the engine like? Well, it’s an EV for a start, so there is no combustion going on inside the EV6. What’s powering the car then? A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) does the job of providing the force for motion. The new Kia EV6 is fully electric, and it comes with a strong 77 kWh battery, which will give you over 500 km of travel in the RWD models and a tad under 500 km for the AWD GT-Line version. Performance figures show that the Kia EV6 RWD models can run through to 100 km/h from a standstill in around 7.3 seconds and 168 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque is available. At the top of the EV6 range sits the AWD GT-Line model, which boasts 239 kW of power and 605 Nm of torque, enabling this EV6 to do the same 0-100 km/h sprint in around 5.0 seconds.
Opt for the DC super-fast boost 350 kW charger, and you can recharge your EV6 from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes. This bigger charger also enables you grab a top-up charge in 4.5 minutes that is enough to take you 100 km.
The EV6 shares many of its parts with Hyundai’s equivalent: the Hyundai IONIQ. Hyundai and Kia are close South Korean automotive manufacturers that share many goodies, ideas, and components with each other. This is handy for new car buyers because part sharing ensures that new EV prices can stay as low as possible for the consumer. Even the base model, the Kia EV6 Air RWD, sits on a set of 19-inch wheels, so there is plenty of grip to be had over the road. The GT-Line RWD and AWD versions get a fancy set of 20-inch wheels.
Safety is at the heart of a new Kia EV6, so features like multi collision detection and braking, centre side airbags, lane keeping assist, active cruise control, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, and accident emergency braking (AEB) with junction turning are just some of the great items that keep you travelling safely in the right direction. ANCAP testers recently crash tested the new Kia EV6 and gave it the full five-star thumbs up.
What differentiates the RWD/AWD GT-Line models from the Air version are features like 20-inch alloys, the GT-Line body kit, heated and ventilated front seats, a 14-speaker Meridian sound system, an augmented reality head-up display, premium relaxation front seats that recline totally for you to be able to catch 40 winks, active sound design, and much more. The Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD is a quick car to drive, having dual electric motors delivering power to your drive. This model costs well over $100k new, but you do get the same gorgeous features as the GT-Line RWD model but with gobs more of acceleration and a nice wide sunroof.
The brand new Kia EV6 is a really nice new EV car to drive. It is comfortable, quiet, and safe, and has to be one of the best-looking EVs currently on the road.
