Want a cool looking car? The 2023 Kia Niro might just fit the bill. I reckon the new design has added a bit more eye-catching angles, more size, and a pair of headlights and DRLs that keep the Niro more in line with the rest of the Kia line-up’s trademark design. Kia and Niro are Korean words. The “ki’ bit in Kia means “to rise,” and “a” translates as Asia. Kia has indicated that the name Kia is based on Sino-Korean characters, which literally translates as “To Rise from East Asia.” Niro, on the other hand, has nothing to do with the Roman Emperor Nero, but is a contraction of two words: Near Zero – a great title for emission reduction targets. So, a cool name to go with a cool-looking car!
Two forms of Hybrid and an electric model of this quite striking SUV are available. There are a few subtle design cues to differentiate between them – like with the alloy wheel design. Inside the 2023 Kia Niro is a sweet-looking interior with a sweeping dash that holds a large array of digital configurations and a large touchscreen to keep you actively connected with the outside world as well as with the journey ahead of you. The modern flavour of the new Kia Niro’s cabin is excellent and one of the best on offer at the present time. There are excellent materials in the mix of trim levels, and the quality of the build and design is superb.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, you’ll find that the displays are all clearly laid out and the clarity of fonts really good. Kia has gone with a combination of buttons and touchscreen accessibility, and I really like that. User-friendliness in a Kia Niro is second to none, Kia being able to blend the high technology onboard the Niro with a simple and straightforward nature of working with the software flow and getting to exactly what you want with little fuss. A top job Kia!
Comfort of the seating for both the front and rear seat passengers is again as good as you’ll get in this class of car/SUV. The nice seats offer great support and cushioning for even longer journeys behind the wheel. Obviously, the higher up the model ladder you go then the more electrics and finer materials are added into mix. Go for the range topping Kia Niro, and the vegan-friendly interior is a nice fabric. Leather would still be my favourite though. A lovely large sunroof is present in the high-end models. Rear seat passengers won’t be disappointed with the level of head, shoulders, knees and toes space. Big six footers will be happy inside a Niro too, and three at that across the back seat. And, of course, it goes without saying again that in the front seats the comfort is outstanding – the adjustment for a perfect seating position for the driver easily found.
Practicality inside the latest Kia Niro is still a big tick area for this Korean SUV. There are loads of compartments to store all the bits and pieces you are going to need for the day out with the family or friends. Bottle holders, cup holders, door bins, a large glovebox, and a sizeable space between the front seats all add up to making this a really practical mid-size SUV. Wireless charging for the phone is present along with an array of ports for electronic accessories (including phones) in both the front and rear of the cabin space. Hey, and the rear windows actually wind all the way down – yay!
Open up the powered boot gate, and, lo and behold, a really handy 475 litres is available in the electric Niro – this is with the back seats up and in place. Hybrid models are available in other markets, which have 25 litres less than this, due to the design of the batteries being housed underneath the back seat. Plug-in hybrid models are also available elsewhere, but have 360 litres, again due to the design and equipment storage. We may see some of these models coming our way as it is early days. Split-folding rear seat functions are there for all models for more luggage options, and the fully-folded rear seats make way for a nice flat floor. Under the boot’s floor you’ll find even more storage space, and, if it’s the electric model, it’s here you’ll find all the charging cable equipment. There is also some other bits in the frunk, with a bit of storage space up there too.
Engines for the 2023 Kia Niro SUV start with the normal hybrid GT-Line models, which use a 1.6-litre Turbo petrol for ICE energy. This combines with an electric motor to ensure that in certain environments you will run on electricity only. Plug-in Hybrid versions (available in other markets) have the same set up as the hybrid version, but these models have a larger battery onboard for storing more electricity to power the car for more of the time. Of course, you can rely on the power outlet from your home, office, or any other place you can suck energy from off of the grid to top up the battery pack. Fully electric models are just that! Kia says that the fully electric EV version of the new Niro will charge from 0 to 80 % full in around 25 minutes. A real world range of over 400 kilometres is easily attainable with the Niro Electric.
One cool feature about the hybrid versions of the new Kia Niro is that they will use their satellite navigation to locate whether you happen to be in the near vicinity of a hospital or a school, and, if so, will switch to electric-only mode to keep the emissions down and the drive nice and quiet.
