It’s Kia’s biggest electric SUV yet, and the 2024 Kia EV9 brings with it competitive pricing, modern looks, and plenty of features.
If you were asked the question: What vehicles seem to have the most futuristic looks in their DNA? Somewhere in the mix would have to be the mention of the popular Hyundai and Kia brands. Going hard with a whole lot of EV products, the EV9 comes hot on the heels of the successfully upgraded EV6. As an SUV, the space and comfort of the new Kia EV9 SUV will be appreciated by those wanting abundant passenger space as well a useful boot that will carry plenty of gear. With 333 litres of boot space behind the rear seats it isn’t huge, but is aided with the addition of a small frunk. You can increase your boot space to 800 litres with the rear seats folded flat – at the expense of passenger space. Of course, the battery space needed under the floor lessens the usable space for luggage. That said, the EV9 cabin is nice and comfortable, with plenty of decent head, shoulders, knees and foot space.
We can expect the price range of the three models to sit somewhere between $97–121k plus on-road costs. Not cheap, but an EV SUV nonetheless. Base models will be well equipped, so you might be attracted to saving a few bob and lucking in on an entry EV9 Air model. Even with this base model, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, two 12.3-inch displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a wireless phone charger make their way inside. All the safety kit that you get with the other two premium models is present, with the only safety item missing from this base model being a remote parking assistant. The new Kia EV9 Air boasts 149 kW of power drawn down from the extensive battery pack, which is said to be good for an over-500 km range. This RWD 2.5 tonne electric SUV will sprint the 0-100 km/h in around 10 seconds, has just the one forward gear, and has a top speed of about 180 km/h.
If speed is what makes your wheels turn, then the more expensive GT-Line models will be the EV9 variants you’ll be aiming for. Both the GT-Line and the GT-Line S boast 282 kW, a 0-100 km/h of around 5.5 seconds, a top speed of 198 km/h, and AWD, all using the one forward gear. The GT-Line offers GT-Line detailing, a more advanced electric steering wheel, electronic front seat adjustment, and LED headlights with an adjustable beam. The GT-Line S boasts a front sunroof that can tilt and slide, and a rear sunroof with a retractable blind to keep the glare out. This is also the only Kia EV9 that lets you convert the middle row of three to two swivelling chairs. A 14-speaker Meridian sound system comes in with this spec, and a Head-up display makes an entrance.
If you’re keen to be driving Kia’s newest and largest 2.5 tonne electric SUV, make sure you put your name down for one of the incoming EV9s.
