SUVs come in all shapes and sizes, and the roomy new Kia Sorento Petrol SUV has the space to carry seven occupants. Five occupants plus a whole lot of luggage is the other popular way to get around in the 2016 Sorento. Whether you need it for five or seven seats, the new Kia Sorento Petrol is an accomplished SUV vehicle, offering plenty of comfort, safety and performance. When I say that the new Kia Sorento is a great vehicle, I do have some backing in that the Sorento SUV has been awarded Australia’s Best AWD SUV and Best Family Wagon by ‘Australia’s Best Cars’. What’s great about the new Kia Sorento SUV is that it excels in an array of areas. Let’s take a closer look.
Five-star safety is what the new Kia Sorento Petrol SUV provides its occupants with. Safety features include: ABS, EBD, BA, ESC, TCS, VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control), ESS (Emergency Stop Signal), front and reverse parking sensors with a dash display, a rear-view camera with in-audio screen display and parking guidelines, LED daytime running lights (DRL), front headlamps with auto-levelling, dusk sensing automatic headlamps, BSD (Blind Spot Detection) and LCA (Lane Change Assist) on higher-end models, LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System), a speed-sensing auto door lock, driver and front passenger SRS airbags, curtain SRS airbags (1st and 2nd row), front seatbelt pre-tensioners with load limiters, side door impact beams (front and rear), impact-sensing auto door unlocking, an anti-theft immobiliser, a burglar alarm, remote central locking with keyless entry and tailgate release, a Smart key with push button start and headlamp escort function to name a few things. There are many more features that are provided to keep the occupants of a new Kia Sorento Petrol safe and secure.
Out and about, the Kia Sorento Petrol has plenty of get-up-and-go in a refined and punchy driving experience. Body roll is kept well in check, and the grip levels are predictable when pushed beyond normal driving speeds, especially when cornering. Equipped with 2WD as standard, the Sorento feels safe, and solid, at speed and the ride quality and comfort is very good. It’s the Kia Sorento Si and SLi models that come with the option of the V6 petrol power plant; the Platinum model comes standard with the diesel unit. So what’s the V6 like? Aggressive performance can be obtained when required, as the V6 is a 3.3-litre packing 199 kW at 6400 rpm and 318 Nm of torque at 5300 rpm. When you search the higher revs, the Sorento Petrol versions can really move, better than a number of alternative machines in the same class. It feels quick, and the 0-100 km/h dash can be completed in less than nine seconds. Top Speed, if this really matters, is beyond 220 km/h. The big wagon can be a little thirsty when pushed hard, though. Those who after AWD traction, you’ll need to look at buying the diesel versions. Perhaps, this is the one gripe I have about the new Sorento – that the AWD traction is not available for the petrol versions.
Interior design and style is good. Simple is good in the case of the Sorento, and the large high definition touch screen in the centre of the dash is clear and easy to understand. This is the control for all sorts of on-board features like music, satellite navigation and Smartphone App connections. The car’s materials and trim are more mainstream; however they do look smart, coordinated and practical. It’s easy to get comfortable in the first and second row, while the third row seats, while relatively roomy, are a little less padded. All in all though, the refinement and feature list is top shelf. Platinum leather is standard on SLi versions, which does up-the-style of the big Kia SUV. Kia Sorento’s are very well equipped, and even in the standard Si version, the feature list is long.
Outside, the exterior of the new Kia Sorento Petrol SUV is eye-catching and nice to look at. This is an area where I think the vehicle scores highly. The big lines of the large SUV shape have been kept trim and athletic, while the detailing is very modern. There are even roof rails and a rear spoiler as part of the stylish new package.
Boasting five-star safety and a seven-year new car warranty, the roomy Kia Sorento Petrol SUV is not an easy machine to overlook. It is a recommended view.
