Refreshed and updated to keep up with changing technology, the 2024 Land Rover Discovery SUV still punches nice and strong in an automotive world of buyers on the lookout for a nice new 4×4-capable SUV. What Land Rover SUVs have that most others don’t is a legendary and interesting history of amazing off-road feats that have been achieved by Land Rover the world over, decade after decade since the second world war. Loved by many, Land Rovers are still going strong.
What more could you want in a 4×4 SUV that is capable of taking the family and the dog on a holiday adventure way out beyond the tarmac? Land Rover’s Discovery SUV is the model that is bought by many an astute buyer who admires its 4×4 ability, and yet likes its luxury, space, and status. The 2024 Land Rover Discovery is packed with the latest technology, and you’ve got some of the best-in-class occupant comfort, with seats that can accommodate up to seven individuals, depending on the seat configuration. Boot space is anywhere between 258 litres with the seven seats in place, right up to 2391 litres when all the back seats have been folded flat.
The 2024 Land Rover Discovery SUV range kicks off with the D300 S. The D300 S has a powerful and efficient twin-turbo diesel motor. The 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine delivers an impressive peak power of 221 kW combined with an equally remarkable 650 Nm of torque at 1500–2500 rpm. The ride comfort of all new Discovery models is amazing, something that remains with you whether travelling on a smooth motorway or corrugated back road. Even this base model can tow a 3500 kg braked trailer with ease, and should you desire to go bush, the D300 S, like any of the new Discovery SUVs, will get you there without even breaking a sweat.
The D300S boasts plenty of infotainment and comfort features. You can wirelessly charge compatible devices, and you can also connect to the internet via the on-board sim preparation wireless hotspot system. There are multiple USB sockets for charging up your phone. The D300 S also comes with Bluetooth connectivity, and the centre dash’s multifunction control screen offers smart device integration for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Love your sounds? Then the six-speaker sound system with a separate amplifier delivers great vibes, and it even comes with speed-sensitive volume adjustment. Digital radio reception (DAB+) in the D300 S is also standard.
The driver of any of the new Land Rover Discovery models will appreciate the clear HD digital driver’s instrument display. And you will also enjoy GPS satellite navigation to guide you around Australia, while the new Discovery also offers speed zone reminders and road sign recognition.
D300 S models also boast two-zone climate control, special ambient lighting throughout the cabin, a starter button, front seat armrests, grab handles, a vanity mirror in both front sun visors, loads of cabin storage, bottle holders, and cup holders. A leather-look steering wheel fits your hand like an old glove, and the seats are partially upholstered with leather. The D300 S interior trim uses some nice gloss-finished inserts to accentuate the Discovery’s high-end feel. The new Disco has awesome headlights for night driving duties, with the high beam boasting an auto-dipping feature and LED technology; the taillights are also LEDs.
At the time of writing, the 2024 Land Rover Discovery SUV hadn’t been crash-tested, though models built up to 2024 came with a full 5-star safety result. Airbags are present right throughout the cabin; the seatbelts are all lap/sash style and offer pretensioning. Safety features also include things like comprehensive crash avoidance technology. ABS (antilock brakes), traction and electronic stability control, rollover stability control, trailer sway control, hill descent and hill holder control, electronic brake force distribution, a lane departure warning with active lane-keeping assistance, blind spot monitoring with active assistance, park distance assistance, and front and rear cameras are standard.
The 2024 Discovery SUV is always going to be a desirable vehicle, so it’s a good thing Land Rover have equipped their SUVs with a comprehensive security system. Central locking with key proximity, remote/keyless engine immobilisation, and an alarm with motion sensors can be set when required.
Even the base model D300 S sits on an impressive set of 20-inch alloy wheels, and you also get a decent full-size spare! Each new Disco SUV comes with a 5-year roadside assistance package along with a 5-year/unlimited km warranty, so you’re really very well covered if you buy one new, right off the showroom floor.
The SE versions of the Land Rover Discovery D300 (D meaning diesel) and P360 (P meaning petrol) get some feature upgrades like a 12-speaker sound system upgrade, two-tone partial leather interior upholstery, an electric sunroof, tinted glass, and 21-inch alloys. But you can also get HSE versions, which get you 22-inch alloys, a 14-speaker stereo, a subwoofer, a special digital sound processor, 360° camera footage, two-tone partial leather interior, metallic trim, fully electronic seats with memory in the front, and electric seats in the rear.
I love the sweet power and torque combination that the latest diesel Discovery models offer, and I think that their combined fuel economy of 7.5 litres/100 km is impressive. But I am also aware that the petrol variants will be preferred by many other buyers. What you get in the P360 Dynamic SE and the P360 Dynamic HSE models is the same level of luxury and trim in the equivalent diesel variants, but it comes with its super-smooth 265 kW/500 Nm 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder petrol-fed motor. A combined fuel economy figure for the P360 versions should be around 9–10 litres/100 km.
Both the diesel and petrol versions of the 2024 Land Rover Discovery will sprint the 0–100 km/h dash in less than 7 seconds, and will run on to a top speed of well over 200 km/h. They both run with the very good 8-speed automatic 4WD system.
With Land Rover known as an off-road king; a swift long-distance tourer; and a people-mover with plenty of comfort, safety, and SUV style, these ingredients all add up to making the latest Discovery SUV a highly desirable vehicle.
