A contender for 2023’s most stylish van has to be the brand new 2023 LDV MIFA. There are not many vans on the road that look quite as good as the MIFA, and I think its to do with the ascending vertical chrome trim that surrounds the front bumper along with the vertically descending front LED lights that sit just inside the chrome surrounds. The dramatic design looks a little like piranha teeth, giving the MIFA real impact right from the word go. Exterior colours are all vibrant and strong.
As you climb aboard the MIFA, whether through the front doors or through either of the two side electric sliding rear passenger entries, you are met with a premium leather interior style, and the seats, though not a true leather material, are superb. The 2023 LDV MIFA’s dash design has been kept simple and uncluttered, with a digital driver’s display taking centre stage behind the steering wheel, and it delivers all of the essential information that a driver needs to travel safely while well being kept informed of the van’s progress. In the middle of the twin-tiered dash sits a large touchscreen that grabs your attention. Also, a large central armrest between the two front seat occupants provides a couple of cup-holders and a properly-good padded arm rest that has been decorated with chrome trimmings. As you would expect in a people mover, the new LDV MIFA has lots of storage spaces in the centre console, in the glovebox, and on the doors.
The MIFAs have Captains chairs in the second row, where the foot and leg rest electrically operates with a lift/descend and extend/contract function, thus comfort is superb. Twin glass panoramic sunroofs make for an epic light and ambient cabin experience, which also adds to the big van’s spacious atmosphere. The MIFA is a seven-seater people-moving van, and it offers first-rate comfort for all passengers, with only the middle person in the third row having any case for complaint – and then that’s just because they don’t quite have the lateral space or view that the other occupants enjoy; that said, it’s still pretty decent.
Despite weighing in at over a rather beefy 2 tonne, the LDV MIFA van will accelerate energetically away from a standstill, and it will cruise effortlessly at motorway speeds. Powering the three MIFA models which are currently on offer is a 2.0-litre Turbo petrol engine that delivers a strong 160 kW. A powerful 360 Nm of torque combines nicely with the smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox, which does a good job of keeping you in the power/efficiency zones, as and when required. The motor is a DOHC engine with VVT technology, so it does the business quite nicely. Being a front wheel drive (FWD) van, the running gear is kept nicely compact up at the front. LDV suggests that the MIFA 2.0-litre petrol vans will return a combined fuel efficiency of 9.3 litres/100 km. I guess that will depend on the driver’s habits and the road conditions, so you will likely see more than this from time to time; sometimes less.
The brand new LDV MIFA van is capable of towing an unbraked trailer up to 750 kg or a braked trailer up to 2000 kg. Both the Executive and the Luxo versions also come with the fully electronic tailgate. In the base model (Mode) you have to do the tailgate manually. The MIFA offers a decent 466 litres of luggage space when the 2nd and 3rd rows are in use. When the 3rd row is not in use and folded up, the space increases to an incredible 1702 litres. MIFA vans also come with an impressive 7-year/200,000 km warranty and 5-year roadside assistance package. This is pretty impressive for what is a very competitively-priced large van/people mover.
ANCAP crash testers have given the MIFA the full 5-star safety pronouncement, so the MIFA excels! Alert warnings for potential forward collisions as well as collision mitigation technology is standard on all three models. A road sign display, blind spot sensors, reverse collision mitigation and warning technology, crash avoidance systems with braking, cross traffic alert, driver attention detection, lane departure warning, active lane keeping assist, parking assistance with a graphical display, a side door exit warning system, electronic brake force distribution (EBD), hill descent control, a hill holder feature, and rollover stability control are all features that come standard on any new LDV MIFA van. Safe for the family then? For sure!
All LDV MIFA models provide Aux Inputs and USB Sockets for front and rear occupants. You also have phone charging ability and Bluetooth connections. All models have the classy digital driver’s display, the speed zone reminder and road sign recognition, as well as a tyre pressure sensor system. Mode, Executive, and Luxe get 6, 8, and 12 speaker audio systems, respectively. The Mode gets a rear camera, while Executive and the Luxe offer front and rear cameras. Climate controlled air conditioning keeps things at just the right temperature for all of the MIFA’s occupants.
All in all, the 2023 LDV MIFA is a very impressive vehicle for carrying seven people in superb comfort. The van rides very well, has decent performance, and will hold up well in an accident. Definitely a van to put on the shopping list, should you need a people mover with plenty of practicality.
