The car that exemplifies the best of what a premium compact can offer is found in the brand new 2019 Mercedes Benz C-Class. A premium compact, luxurious car, the latest C-Class has recently had a facelift with as many as 6500 new or updated components under its skin. Being little brother to the flash E-Class and S-Class, the C-Class benefits from the trickle-down of the technology used in these big guns.
To look at, the newest C-Class offers that similar sophisticated and bold styling that the previous model has but with some new styling revisions like new bumper and grille moulds, snazzy alloy wheel designs and LED headlamps standard across the entire range of sedan, cabriolet, coupe and wagons. Also noticeable is the redesign of the interior which, up till now, hasn’t seen the artist’s flick since 2014. The fresh interiors are again awesome and bring the C-Class right up to speed again with regards to state-of-the-art design.
A powerful straight six-cylinder diesel motor becomes available straight out of the S-Class for the latest C-Class range. Otherwise, the familiar four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that are offered in the previous line-up of C-Class cars power the rest of the range. A real new gem to power the C-Class comes in the form of the 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine that’s found in the C200. An adorable engine with plenty of smooth torque and seamless gear changes via the nine-speed automatic makes this the perfect match for the luxurious C-Class.
Just because I can, I’ll dwell on the mild-hybrid C200 engine a little further because it is remarkably frugal and responsive. The four-cylinder hybrid packs 135 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, putting the power down via the likable and agile RWD chassis. Being able to scamper through the 0-100 km/h sprint in around 7.7 seconds and then run on to a top speed of 235 km/h makes this the darling of the range. The turbo-charged 1.5-litre motor combines with a 48 volt electric motor to deliver a punch which is more powerful than you might first expect. Fuel efficiency averages out to around 6.5 litres/100 km which is class leading.
Those of you who want pure raw power, then the C43 will probably be the new C-Class engine for you. In this guise, the car has a muscly twin-turbo, six-cylinder petrol motor with 287 kW and 520 Nm that will accelerate you from zero to 100 in less than 5 seconds while boasting the added traction of AWD in the process.
Depending on the model, the new Mercedes Benz C-Class can get cool features like sports suspension modes, lowered ride heights, larger tyres and brakes, damper control, steering and throttle control and more. C-Class handling is impeccable, and the ride very nice. Manual gearbox versions get the familiar six-speed unit, while the seven-speed auto is replaced with the beautifully smooth nine-speeder right across the range. Sedan models boast 480 litres of luggage space, while the estate has 490 litres with the rear seats upright. Cabriolet models are some of the most attractive convertibles on the road.
Inside the latest C-Class you get a nice roomy cabin that is an excellent size for the compact class that it masters. The category standard for luxury is well-and-truly trumped with the latest C-Class, with the cabin ambience unmatched. Technology offers all the latest goodies except the double-width touchscreen and MBUX infotainment seen in the latest A-Class. The new 10.5 inch infotainment screen looks the goods though. Also, features like inflatable seat bolsters, pushbutton start, mood interior lighting control, dual-zone climate control, leather trim (as well as artificial leather trim), a new steering wheel with touch sensitive controls, electric front seats, a digital driver’s display (like in the S-Class) and premium audio make this a car you’re going to love to drive. The seats are beautifully crafted and suited for those who need to spend long hours behind the wheel.
As far as safety goes, Mercedes Benz is always going to impress. Automated braking, attention assist, blind spot monitoring, a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors and nine airbags feature on all new C-Class models. The safety shell is super strong, and the full five-star safety tick goes with the new C-Class.
Those of you who are on the lookout for a brand new premium compact car, then the 2019 C-Class has to be on your short list. Composed, stylish luxury is what the new C-Class delivers.
