Mercedes Benz SLC is the name for one of the most desirable Sports Luxury Coupe models on the planet. Always beautifully made, sumptuous and powerful, the 2017 SLC Roadster has a few extra features to keep it a step ahead.
As elegant and as sporty as you’ll find anywhere, driving the new Mercedes Benz SLC is a special experience for those lucky enough to be driving with distinction. Featuring the finer things you’d expect to see in a Merc, the SLC still provides an analogue speedo cluster with silver linings and crisp, clear lettering. Circular air vents for those in the front seats are trimmed in silver and provide a plenty of fresh, clean air thanks to pollen filters and a strong but very quiet air-conditioning system. Leather seating for two is first class and remains some of the more deluxe rides on offer – especially in a sporty roadster like this one.
With modern Mercedes elegance comes function and practicality, and one of the aspects Mercedes has improved on in recent years is that of the on-board systems being much easier to use than the fiddlier and sometimes annoying zillion buttons on the centre console of older models. It’s nice to now have all the luxury features being doubly nice because they’re a breeze to use. Keeping a track on your drive and destination is as good as it’s ever been. The Mercedes Benz SLC models all feature the latest-generation multimedia systems, 3D navigation, telephone and internet. Via the 7-inch media display screen you can flick between functions simply and efficiently with little time delay. Better still is the addition of Mercedes Benz’s COMAND Online. Mercedes Me Connect includes standard services which are able to provide you with automatic support in the event of a breakdown or an accident, plus remote online services which enable the vehicle settings to be carried out by smartphone – really easy and very convenient.
A nice feature the Mercedes Benz SLC provides its occupants is open top motoring at the press of a button. The fully power-retractable roof goes down in less than 20 seconds, and in the process the boot separator closes automatically. Riding with the roof down is enjoyable and refreshing, yet Mercedes designers have ensured the drive is relatively free from air turbulence.
Improving on what was already a superior drive; the new Mercedes Benz SLC Roadster grips the road fiercely yet rides with a great level of comfort thanks to the varying drive modes the driver can select. The most comfortable drive mode setting could easily be the preferred setting for most of the time travelling in the new SLC, as even in this mode the SLC chassis can find plenty of grip and control. Flick to Sport Plus mode and the SLC is very tight if rather firm.
So what power is available for the new SLC? Six-speed manual gearboxes and a very special nine-speed auto are the options available to send power to the rear wheels in the SLC range. The base model starts at the Mercedes Benz SLC 180 where a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine achieves 115 kW and delivers a maximum torque of 250 Nm. Acceleration is always brisk, especially when the pedal is prodded assertively. Smooth silky gear changes are the norm for every SLC model. Truly enjoyable and very efficient, this is a highly rated roadster.
Next on offer is the petrol-fed Mercedes Benz SLC 200, a 2.0-litre with a 135 kW output and 300 Nm of torque available. A broader more muscled feel makes for an effortless drive in this model. Both the 1.6 and 2.0-litre engines have the latest direct petrol injection, variable valve control and turbocharging technology for efficient lively and powerful performance. They are also very clean engines that come with the big tick for Euro 6 emission class standards.
Rated at 180 kW and delivering a maximum torque of 370 Nm, the Mercedes Benz SLC 300 is a quick ride. But the king pin in the performance stakes is the latest Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 with 270 kW and 520 Nm of torque to smoke the tarmac with. Power comes from a 3.0-litre V6 Biturbo unit that packs blistering performance as a result.
That leaves one last model; and the Mercedes Benz SLC 250 d comes with power from a 4-cylinder diesel engine with 150 kW of power and a maximum torque of 500 Nm. Awesome fuel consumption and low CO2 output is what this modern diesel engine provides alongside lusty, low-revving power. Being a BlueTEC designed engine, the nitrogen oxide emissions have been reduced by up to 90 percent.
Loaded with accident avoidance systems and kitted out with all the finest active safety features, the new Mercedes Benz SLC Roadster is a masterful piece of automotive engineering.
