MG3

Full of life and pleasant to drive on any main road around Australia is a brand new small hatch; new and with a different beat, the MG3 provides a fun and fulfilling way to get about.  Numerous versions of the MG3 are to be available in Australia based on the differing styles and flavours a new small hatch buyer desires.  Generally, the sportier MG3 has flashier 16-inch “Diamond” Alloy wheel, spoilers and some of the brighter colours for the exterior.  If you want luxury, then the version of MG3 that you’ll be after has plusher seats, higher-end equipment, and a feeling of comfort that is a class above that of other MG3 models – not to mention some other new hatches money can buy.  The base model MG3 has a nicely specced interior, good seats and offers all the necessary equipment to make an everyday drive comfortable – without being over the top.

One feature that all current MG3 models have is the lively 78 kW engine.  Capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h in a little over 10 seconds, the five speed manual gearbox quickly slips between the gears to access the engine’s useful 137 Nm at 4750 rpm.  The normally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine is happy to be pushed hard when required, while the fuel economy is always excellent.  A combined drive that includes town and country roads returns 5.8 litres/100 km.

The MG3 has a length that is a smidgeon over 4.0 metres.  There certainly seems to be enough room in the front, while the rear seats offer adequate space for long legs.  Head room in the front and rear is good for most adults.  Rear seats provide 972 cm of height from the lower seat padding to the roof.  As far as boot space goes, the MG3 hatch has an adequate 256 litres – this is with the optional spare tyre in place.  Goodness knows who would really want a boot without a proper spare tyre in it!  Murphy’s Law…you know what I mean.  Of course, the rear shelf can be removed, and the split-fold rear seats can be lowered to provide a maximum luggage area of 1262 litres.

I can see a number of families that have two kids really liking the style of the new MG3.  On looks alone, you are going to own a new car that looks sassy and unique, drives well and makes a statement a little similar to a Mazda3 in its own sort of way.  Slip into the MG3 interior; and even the base model has a nicely designed three-spoke steering wheel; cool silver trimmings for the handle, vents and instrument surrounds; front and side SRS airbags; cup holders, electric windows, an MP3 stereo system with four speakers, a USB port and an extra auxiliary input for other electronic devices.

MG has taken safety seriously, so the MG3 five-door hatch comes up trumps in this arena.  SRS airbags are located at the front and sides of the car.  ABS, Stability Control, EBD, EBA, Hill Hold Control (great for those of us who don’t enjoy starting off on an incline) and a cool feature called Brake Disc Wiping – keeps the discs clean and functioning at the best, which all adds up to a great safety package a car the size of the MG3.
