If you want to make a cool fashion statement on four wheels then a new Mini is the deal! These cars have always been cool ever since the first little mini rolled off the show room floor a long, long, long time ago. 2020 Mini models now include a Countryman PHEV, also known as a Countryman Hybrid. Now that’s cool!
One obvious feature that you get with a Countryman over standard little Minis is that it has the biggest boot space in the line-up, which is always a plus. If you have to take the dog to the park, head off to the beach with the kids or need to chuck the bike in the back the Countryman does all of this with ease, making it the go-to-model for those with active outdoor lifestyles.
Under the boot floor is a handy storage space for little things not so regularly used, while the rear seats can fold fully flat or partially depending on your needs. Luggage nets and straps, a 12 V socket and tethering points are handy features in the cargo space. One cool feature about the Countryman is that you can fold the middle section of the rear seats flat, making it the perfect little ski wagon! Oh, and another cool feature is that the rear gate opens and closes electronically with a waving of your foot or a push of the button.
Rear seat passenger space is excellent, especially for those in the window seats. Even the middle seat adult passenger will be alright for space – be it a bit tighter than those on the wings. A rear seat option allows for the rear seats to be reclining as well as forward-and-backward sliding.
With the PHEV model you also get the addition of being able to do an awful lot of your commuting miles on battery power alone. Now this little car makes some pretty cool sense in a modern world besotted with climate change rhetoric – just don’t look too closely into the processes involved in creating your brand new battery powered cars and you’ll be just fine with the end result. Certainly the hybrid technology is fantastic, lowering emissions in the urban jungle while enabling your wallet to splurge out at places other than your local gas station.
Mini’s quirky design always bring a smile to the dial, and even with the elongated Countryman PHEV models you still get the cute lines, round lights and that chunky overall profile that looks cool!
Inside the Mini Countryman PHEV the cuteness continues with unmistakable Mini characteristics like the round dials, round infotainment system, and that fun chunky Mini flavour. BMW makes all the Mini models now, and with BMW’s design and engineering prowess all models, including the Mini Countryman PHEV, are high quality vehicles with high-end materials and that superior fit and finish. Mini cars are very solidly built, and the Countryman boasts a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating.
On the dash there is the cool round digital display touchscreen with toggle switches situated below for quick channelling to various infotainment features that you require. Essentially, the infotainment system is BMW’s iDrive with that fun-factor that Mini can only bring to the design. Loads of storage options throughout the cabin, and in the front, make it an excellent car for the small family. Room in the Countryman front seats is also very good and the seats are exceptionally comfortable.
The more you are prepared to spend the more features you can get. If you spend top dollar then your new Mini Countryman Hybrid will boast all the latest features that includes leather trim, satellite navigation, a high-end audio unit, zoned climate control, driver mode adjustment, mood lighting and lots more. If you want to save yourself some dollars then you’ll still get a nice drive but without all the unnecessary frills.
Out on the road even the Mini Countryman Hybrid model expresses itself through the corners with plenty of grip and surety, albeit with a little more roll than the smaller Mini models. It is a Mini after all, so the Countryman still delivers with plenty of the all-important fun factor. Put your foot down, and this little wagon can really get a shove on, dispatching the 0-100 km/h dash in less than seven seconds.
Essentially, the internal combustion part of the power equation comes from the very feisty 1.5 Cooper S engine, while the green part of the power equation has the plug-in electric battery delivering this model as a clean, green, Mini commuting machine. BMW suggests that you can even get as low as 2.5 litres/100 km. The total power output is a tasty 165 kW sprinkled with lashings of 385 Nm of torque – even from low down in the engine revs.
Being the Countryman you also get engine power dynamically fed to all the wheels, thanks to the clever AWD system. This is the model for going more places, taking on adventure and seeing a little more of Australia than you might do in a dinky-wee hatch. In more extreme situations, the engine’s power is directed to the rear wheels – so mud and snow are no hassles for the Hybrid Countryman at all.
Make that extra declaration and drive the brand-new stylish Mini Countryman PHEV, now available in Australia. This is the one of the more fun Hybrid models you’ll find on the market at present.
