Somewhere between $40k to $75k (at least at the time I’m writing this), you can find yourself owning a brand new Mini Hatch. In 2024, there are many choices for buyers who are keen on owning one of these fun little hatchbacks; there are as many as 14 models inside the Hatch range alone, and that’s not even taking into consideration the 10 Mini Convertibles, the 7 Mini Clubmans, the 11 Mini Countryman SUVs, or the six Mini Countryman Wagons available for buying.
A 2024 Mini Hatch three-door has nice comfortable seating for four adults; the fifth seat in the middle of the rear bench of the five-dr is too tight for any useful adult space, and thus is unlikely to be used on long distance trips – unless you have children. That said, the quality of trim, the comfort of the seats and their support are excellent. The three-door’s boot space measures just 211 litres with the rear seats up and will expand to 731 litres with them folded down. The five-door Mini Hatch has some extra overall length for your luggage, which allows for 278-litres of cargo-carrying capacity with the rear seats up and 941 litres with the seats down.
As part of the deal, the 2024 Mini Hatch comes with a 5-year/unlimited km warranty as well as three years of roadside assistance. The latest Cooper Classic Hatchback 3-door model comes with a DCT 7-speed gearbox that’s linked to a 1.5-litre ULP turbo motor. Both the three- and five-door Mini hatchbacks, along with the three-door convertibles, got a minor update in 2020, which brought a delicately altered front-end appearance and the adoption of restyled LED fog lights, some more aerodynamically shaped external rear-view wing mirrors, and a sweetly revised interior with a new leatherette trim.
Three-door Minis are available across the model range; however, the more practical five-door versions are reserved for the longer wheelbase Cooper or Cooper S variants. The new Mini Hatch makes use of any of the following engines: the 100 kW/220 Nm 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder Cooper ULP motor; the 141 kW/280 Nm, 4-cylinder Cooper S ULP motor; the mighty 225 kW/450 Nm JCW ULP motor; and the zero-emissions 135 kW/270 Nm MINI Electric motor. Aside from the stunningly fun to drive JCW versions, the other two ULP motors are pretty brisk and good on fuel. And, of course, there’s the peppy, emissions-free Mini EV runabout. So all you need to do is choose the form of Mini propulsion that’s right for you and get on down to talk turkey.
The 2024 Mini Hatch’s interiors are really well crafted and look a quality package. Everything feels solid, and the trim and materials, even on the base models, are right up there with the best in class. If you want a really contemporary look that is quirky and cool, then it’s hard to overlook all that the little Mini has to offer. The car’s interior is set off nicely by the iconic circular centre-dash display that the Mini, regardless of the model, brings to the small hatchback show.
And if you want to take the fashion and contemporary style out to another level, then the EV version is another direction you may want to take. The 2024 Mini Cooper EV might not look that different on the outside to any of the other models, but it’s what’s on the inside of this new model that really stands out. Mini’s Operating System 9 software is a set-up that handles the car’s infotainment and other elements of the driving experience. The car’s different driving modes change LED lights throughout the cabin via the ultra-slim 9.4-inch round OLED display. It’s cool and current while harking back to a blast from the past.
Safety tech and construction in any of the Mini hatchbacks are very good, and Mini have, for quite some time, always performed well in crash testing. Out on the road, the handling is first-class, and any of the Minis you drive will perform well and stop hard.
This is a car to enjoy!
