With a new range of responsive engines, the Mini marque just keeps on getting better.

In the heart of the base model Mini Cooper is a 90 kW 1.6 litre petrol engine. A total of 160 Nm is at the ready to offer fun acceleration and willing performance. And boasting a choice between having the engine linked to either the slick-shifting six-speed automatic or nicely gated six-speed manual gearbox, your preferences are covered, and you can get down to the business of enjoying your Mini Cooper experience. A little over $30, 000 will get you into one of these.

Two petrol engines sit at the performance end of the Mini Cooper spectrum. Hop into the hot 135 kW Cooper S, and you’ll truly embarrass the big guns at the lights. A 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.0 seconds, and a top speed of 228 km/h has the Mini Cooper S hunting for the corners and pulling away on the straights. Awesome balance and grip give the Mini Cooper S so much driving appeal. Inside, the racy interior is the perfect blend of fun sport and luxury trim. This punch packs a lot of entertainment.

Want more power? If you really need it, then there is the Mini Cooper Works. A top speed of around the 240 km/h mark, and a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds is a whole lot of serious performance potential. This motor uses every ounce of the 240 Nm available through six manual gears. And just to add a little more zing, an after boost can aid the engine to access 280 Nm! Superbly quick and heaps of fun, you can really embarrass owners of larger more expensive sports cars – whether at the lights or in tight twisting turns. Here is true “see you later” material, making this one of the hottest motors ever used in a Mini. The supercharged 1.6-litre engine is a gem, and shows you just how the superior power to weight ratio and acceleration make the laws of physics really deliver a rapid package!

BMW have enabled mini to offer a diesel option for the Mini Cooper. And what a superb car the Mini Cooper D is. My pick of the bunch, the Cooper D has all the fun of the grippy chassis, but matches this up with an engine that is sprightly and so fuel efficient. On average, you can expect a fuel economy figure of around the 3.8 to 4.0 litres/100 km. This is a very sensible option, and it has all the style you could wish for, as well.

Engines in the Mini Cooper are transversely mounted to provide more comfortable cabin room and a choice of either a manual or automatic transmission. What people who fall for the Mini’s dynamic drive enjoy in this particular small car is the wonderfully stable handling, exhilarating ride, and right-at-the-ready engine response. The multi-link rear and a McPherson single link front suspension set-up make the Cooper stick to the road like glue.

Mini Cooper interior features come with comfortable seating for four large adults, six-airbag protection, a premium audio system, navigation system and many other options.
