One of Mitsubishi’s most capable vehicles on-and-off the road, the new Pajero Sport has been given a spruce up with its new styling, as well as having some techie upgrades added to entice those who need a big, luxurious, 4×4 SUV to drive with all that go anywhere ability on a casual basis.
Mitsubishi has installed a new 8-inch digital driver’s display and an updated touchscreen of the same size for the excellent new infotainment system. The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport feels classy, and with some additional soft-padded surfaces placed throughout the interior you know you’re in a special vehicle. Rear passengers now have access to their own air-conditioning outlet which is next to a USB port, so life in the big Pajero is pretty comfortable. A powered tailgate with a hands-free feature makes life easy when loading and unloading the boot space. Another new piece of kit is that you can now access some of the Pajero Sport SUV’s controls and information through a smartphone.
Inside the big rig there is leather throughout which gives it a smart, luxurious ambience. There isn’t any flashy style but it is nice and appealing all the same. It’s the fancy gadgets like a 360 degree camera, the Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigationion System (UMS), heated front seats and an 8-speaker premium audio system that sets the top Exceed model apart from the others. For the most “coolness” and biggest style, go for the Pajero Sport Black Edition with its black 18-inch alloy wheels, black nudge bar, black grille, black roof, black tailgate spoiler and black roof rails.
How do you think it looks? The nose has had a facial, and it looks even more streamlined than before. The nose treatment looks good, and the modern style is eye-catching. Being a particularly large SUV it’s hard to hide the height and length which equates to it being rather bulky, however it is a big mammoth after all and it does what it says on the tin; by which I mean that it won’t win a beauty contest but it will carry a family in comfort to places well off the beaten track. Head out behind, and the Sport has a new look LED taillight design that runs vertically down the rear pillars. There is no mistaking the Pajero Sport’s mass, but a smart brushstroke by the new Pajero’s design team keeps it all in proportion.
Being big also means that you have a commanding view of the road ahead, and the feeling of being in a fortress is illustrated with the way it rides smoothly, silently and unfazed. Its predecessor boasted the full 5-star safety rating, so one would assume that the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will clean up in this department again. The latest version boasts the newest Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert systems. Dual frontal, side chest, driver knee and side head airbags (curtains) are standard. Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) are also standard. Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats. A new Forward Collision warning system, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Active Cruise Control and seat belt pre-tensioners are all present, too. This is a very strong vehicle, and the safety shell remains very sound in the event of a large collision.
Being a 4WD SUV, the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has a redesigned 4WD switch providing access to the off-road modes. Off-roading is a Pajero Sport strength, and there really is nothing that will jump out, say ‘Boo’ and then unsettle it once you hit the rough stuff. Huge traction, big ground clearance and things like Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist all make life pretty cushy for the driver when the rugged terrain gets scary. There are buttons and dials on the centre console for you to select accordingly for what mode best suits the terrain that you’re on. Obviously, in normal mode the car does all the selecting for you but you still have the ability to fine tune this off-road beast to your tastes. It has a centre diff-lock in low mode for the really serious 4×4 buffoon, but you need a stomach made of steel for that sort of stuff.
Plenty of space graces the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport interior. You can seat seven with the third row seats up or you can seat five with the big boot being ready to swallow plenty of kit for the ‘hols’. First and second rows get decent leg and head room and there are also isofix points for kiddie seats, should you require them.
Plenty of grunt, yes, but it still takes 11 seconds to scamper through the 0-100 km/h. And, that’s ok in my book because this vehicle offers a great ride plus the ability to ford streams. So who cares if a Porsche Cayenne leaves this for dead on a motorway! Its top speed is around the 180 km/h mark, and that’s enough for most people who will buy a vehicle like this. The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport uses a turbo-diesel, 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine shared with the Triton. It’s good for 133 kW of power and 430 Nm of torque which is put out to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox that works a treat. Paddle shifters are a standard gig.
Based on the Triton platform, the Pajero Sport is RWD most of the time but shifts to AWD when needed under the normal 4×4 mode. This aids fuel economy and of course means that you can select what you require as you require it for light-to-serious off-road work and play.
Take into account the price, off-road ability and space and you have a very good machine that’s safe and dependable. Oh, and it has a seven year warranty!
