Mitsubishi’s latest Outlander range includes both ICE and PHEV variants. The SUV line-up is quite an inspiring set of cars. The Aspire and Exceed Outlanders even sit on 20-inch rims! A 2022 Outlander is an attractive SUV; from any direction it looks good, thanks owing to the pleasant trim and detailing over the Outlander’s clean body shape. At the front of the new Outlander is a striking pair of LED headlight clusters situated at either end of the bumper, and the extensive use of chrome trim and bold bumpers and grilles, particularly on the higher-end models, set this SUV apart with its smart design.
This is a 2022 model year Mitsubishi Outlander, and it’s loaded with a whole lot of amazing technology, safety, and comfort. Inside the modern SUV’s interior things are all very nicely presented, the high-grade Exceed variants are quite stunning with the diamond stitching on the doors and the seats. Sitting on top of the dashboard is a brand new 9.0-inch infotainment system that features AM, FM, and DAB+ radio. The sounds coming through the 10-speaker Bose audio system you find in the Exceed are outstanding. You can get your music fix via the wireless Apple CarPlay or wired Android Auto smartphone mirroring, and wireless phone charging makes life with your phone a bit easier in an Outlander.
In any 2022 Outlander – yes even the base model ES – Mitsubishi has gone to a great deal of effort to make the interior feel comfortable. And, once you get into the Exceeds, the cabin boasts a luxurious, premium feel where soft touch materials along the dashboard, along the centre tunnel and the door trims give it a nudge toward a first-class experience.
It’s not hard to get yourself comfortable behind the steering wheel of any new Outlander. Thanks to the multi adjustment in both the steering column and the driver’s seat, anyone can feel at home in this space. The front seats do offer plenty of leg and head room, even for taller drivers. Second rowers have a space that is surprisingly accommodating, with ample head, shoulders, knees, and toes room for adult passengers. All of the seats in the second row offer families with small kiddies top-tether points for baby seats, while the two window seats come with ISOFIX. So, if you do have triplets, then here is a vehicle for you! Temperature control is covered, and premium models also boast climate control zones for all occupants, and with their own air vents the ride is a comfortable and relaxed one back here. You also get a nice mix of USB-C and USB-A ports for added electronic accessories front and back of cabin.
The second row folds and slides forward for access into the third row of seats that are best reserved for younger kids. You won’t easily fit any adults back here, and even bigger kids will find it a squeeze. These third row seats can also store away into the floor nice and flat for providing more cargo space. Second row seats also offer a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration. Luggage-carrying capacity depends on who is sitting where, so 163 litres of space can be used for cargo when all three rows of seats are up and in place. 478 litres of space is available when the third row is stowed away. Up to the full 1461 litres can be made use of when the second and third rows are folded down flat.
A Bluetooth hands-free telephone system with steering wheel controls and voice activation is part of the Outlander experience. Higher-end models also boast things like the BOSE premium sound system with 10 speakers, adaptive cruise control, an adjustable speed limiter, automatic headlamps, automatic rain sensing wipers, a head up display, heated front seats, hill start assist, keyless operation with keyless entry, leather appointed seats, power lumbar support for front driver’s and front passenger’s seat, a powered panoramic sunroof along with a powered tailgate, privacy glass with UV ray reduction, sunshades for the 2nd row of seats, triple-zone climate control, and loads more.
Any new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander comes with the decent 5-star ANCAP safety rating, so this really is a great SUV for the family. There are also the PHEV models available, which are ideal if a lot of your time is spent running about town and city streets.
Opt for a PHEV Outlander, and the DC fast charge takes approximately 38 minutes to get it up from nothing to 80%. The PHEV versions also come with an enhanced regenerative braking mode, super all wheel control (s-awc), 20-inch alloy wheels, collision mitigation, and up to 84 km of pure electric range. That’s a fair distance when you think about it, especially if you’re an urban dweller.
Thus far I haven’t really given a tip to the base model, but even the petrol ES Outlander and ES Outlander PHEV provides plenty of desirable standard equipment. An ES model boasts a fine set of 18-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch trip computer display, a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a dual-zone climate control system with second row air vents, a handy 40/20/40 folding second row, trailer stability assist, hill start assist, and even hill descent control.
LS gets you a few more additional features over and above the ES. So, privacy glass, a rolling cargo blind, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, USB power for rear passengers, a powered tailgate with a hands-free opening function, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated door mirrors, automatic headlights with auto high-beam, a silver exterior garnish to enhance the pleasant SUV’s styling, roof rails, LED fog lamps and rain-sensing windscreen wipers find their way onboard.
Each new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander boasts a 10-year powertrain warranty, a 5-year new vehicle warranty, and 5-years of roadside assistance. Service your Outlander through a Mitsubishi dealership, and the warranty extends out to 200,000 km.
The Outland PHEV’s fuel consumption is sensational, even less than 2 litres/100 km can be on the cards if you spend your time charging the car at home at night and then driving very little outside the city boundaries (and less than 80 km/day). But if you do without the more expensive PHEV versions, then the 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol 4-cylinder engine with 135 kW of power and 245 Nm of torque offers decent performance. Fuel economy is stated to be 8.1 litres/100km on a combined cycle, though this will likely be closer to 9.0–10 litres/100 km in the real world.
The latest Mitsubishi Outlanders also come with a range of additional AWD modes: Eco, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow and Mud. You’re good for towing a braked trailer up to 1600 kg and an unbraked trailer up to 750 kg. Buy one of these new, and you’re onto something good.
