I’ve got to confess that seeing the Mitsubishi Mirage Hatch being driven around by one of my clients, and seeing her enjoyment of the very low new car pricing and low running costs has got me intrigued in how the sedan-styled Mirage feels and drives. On all accounts, the roomy cabin space and lively engines go a long way to making the smallest Mitsubishi sedan an excellent small commuter.
Base pricing for the new Mitsubishi Mirage Sedan ES automatic is around $18k which makes this a very competitively priced small sedan to buy. This gets you a shiny new white ES sedan with a 1.2-litre DOHC MIVEC petrol engine, a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, Bluetooth connectivity, electric power steering, 15 inch alloy wheels and front fog lamps as some of the standard features. You can add extra packages for added kit, so adding a Sport pack, a Platinum pack, and interior Cool pack or an extra Protection pack means that for some extra money, the low buy-now price can be minimally increased to get you a really nice small sedan. If you don’t mind changing the gears yourself, then the manual version of the same ES Sedan is priced at around $16k!
At first glance, the chunky styling looks different but grows on you – in a nice way. The new sedan styling is more defined and better looking than the Mirage Hatch, but that’s just my opinion. The deep front air dam and bigger headlamps are a nice detail on what is a good looking small sedan. Mitsubishi offer the Mirage Sedan in four bright colours, all of which show off the cars clean lines nicely.
Inside the new Mirage Sedan is a well thought out cabin space with plenty of storage compartments and a well coordinated decor. The ES has a nicely shaped steering wheel that fits nicely into the driver’s grip. Those who opt for the LS model have a leather-bound steering wheel. LS models also gain a leather-bound gearshift and some extra chrome detailing for the car’s interior trim. Air conditioning is a standard feature on both Mirage Sedans, however, the LS gets climate control. Central locking, power mirrors and steering wheel audio controls are standard even on the ES. Cup holders, door pockets and bottle holders are all great features for the small Mirage Sedan, and this car will go down well with those of us who love to carry lots of stuff with us on even the shortest trips. Incredibly, the new Mirage Sedan offers 450 litres of luggage carrying ability in the boot, so that’s better than some bigger sedans!
Under the bonnet is a peppy 1.2- litre engine that keeps up with legal speed limits on the open road. It confidently holds the road, and the engine happily spins through the full allowance of engine revs. To get the most performance out of the engine you’ll find that the mid-range and beyond gets the best results. An area where the little Mirage shines is in the fuel consumption category. This is one of the thriftiest petrol-fed cars on Australian roads, so there is no need to worry about the cost of motoring at the pumps. Driven normally, the Mirage Sedan can offer an average fuel consumption of under 5 litres/100 km. A great robust five-speed manual gearbox is offered, along with the option of a very smooth CVT auto. The great thing about the little Mirage is that it’s very easy to drive and manoeuvre about town, making it a great little city car.
A good MP3 compatible CD/radio audio unit is available on both the ES and LS models, and the sound of music is pleasant via the standard four speakers. An audio input jack and a USB jack is standard, while Bluetooth Connections make for easy communication with friends and colleagues while out and about. An anti-theft encrypted engine immobiliser and an array of five-star safety features make this a very well priced small sedan that will satisfy the desires and demands of the cheaper small car buyer.
