Quicker and more powerful than ever, the new Porsche Boxster has been tweaked in all the right places – including engine power – and again takes out top honours for the world’s best roadster. There are a few changes to note.
Let’s be honest, the Porsche Boxster is a performance car and so we’ll take a look under the bonnet. Lying in wait for the base model is an up-rated flat six-cylinder engine. Bored out to 2.9-litres has meant that this Porsche Boxster’s engine puts out a snappy 188 kW – (up from 180kW).
The Porsche Boxster S has the other superb flat six-cylinder engine which is a 3.4-litre and now boasts 228 kW. This equates to a glorious engine note and plenty of excitement. Both the base model and the Boxster S perform the 0-100 km/h sprint in the mid-five second bracket. Also worth noting is that new the Porsche Boxster has brand new transmissions to do the business – and the result is even quicker sprint times.
The newest kid on the block is the seductive Porsche Boxster Spyder. And it is this model that takes out the power rating honours. A 235 kW output and a 4.8 – 5.1 second time to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint means that this is a very, very quick roadster.
Superb build quality and Porsche’s renowned reliability continue with the Boxster evolution. Tight, Smart interiors boast blue tooth communications, audio units and plenty of electronic gadgetry. For what you get, this is perhaps worth considering as “quite an affordable sports car”. To drive, the Boxster is so well balanced and shatteringly fast.
Currently, Porsche are offering a Limited Black edition of the Boxster S. It’ll be special, no doubt.
It’s back! The fabled Porsche Boxster returns better, faster and stronger. With a 2.9-litre 188 kW or 3.4-litre 228 kW engine to power the lightweight body, you will be sure to fly.
The smaller six-cylinder engine is meshed to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed PDK automatic. This package accelerates the Boxster from 0-100 km/h in a rapid 5.9 seconds (PDK 5.6 –5.8 seconds depending on equipment choice). Truly wonderful on-road dynamics makes this relatively well priced roadster sensational to drive. Grip comes with every corner, and the car feels as flat and as in-control as you could experience on four wheels, anywhere.
You might be able to run to the higher price tag of the Porsche Boxter S. With the bigger 6-cylinder motor expect sprint times as low as 5.3 seconds for the six-speed manual and 5.2 seconds for the seven-speed PDK. Quicker and every bit as good at going around the corners, the Porsche Boxster S is a gem. It’s not much of a step up in price, either.
A combined fuel economy run of well under 10 litres/100 km is something rather special in a car as phenomenally quick as the Boxster S. Just think… a top speed of 270 km/h and this efficient…wow! The average fuel consumption rates highly in the Roadster world– particularly with all the performance packed down and ready to wind up the rear wheels.
More power is still available and the Porsche Boxster Spyder is the machine to pack 235 kW. Very low five second times are all it takes for this one to break 100 km/h from a standstill.
Now we come to the interior of this German quickie. The interiors of the Porsche Boxster models are designed around its two occupants. Expect the best because in this European supercar brand craftsmanship is of a sublime standard. Inside the well-dressed interior are fully adjustable electric leather seats that are designed to enhance your driving experience by making sure you are well placed and comfortable. The steering wheel also tilts and has telescoping capability. The optional steering wheel mounted controls for the entertainment system are available for making your trip pleasantly relaxed and, yes, the seats are heated – so there won’t be cold bodies sitting in this open-top Roadster’s seats!
Head and leg room are excellent. Dual climate controls provide just the right temperature when you need it. There is a top-of -the-line entertainment system that includes a CD changer, a navigational aid and telephone communications. A trip computer monitors all aspects of your rapid trip.
Safety is off the top shelf and things like rain sensing wipers, heated mirrors, a vehicle anti-theft device, ABS Anti-lock brakes, automatic load-levelling, electronic brake assistance, traction control and vehicle stability control systems all work to keep you on the road safely. Inside, there are driver and passenger front and side airbags. An electronic parking aid helps to ensure you don’t back into anything – it just never looks good!
