Turbocharged with plenty of power and packed with five-star safety, Proton’s sweet looking Suprima S is a fashionable set of wheels that will look good anywhere you care to travel. Best of all, it doesn’t cost the earth, and there’s even a five year warranty to go along with it. Lotus have had their hand in the tuning of the Suprima S and this is evident in the car’s nice handling characteristics.
Designers of the Suprima S exterior have hit the right note. I like the way the car looks, especially the way they have wrapped the headlamps around flush with the bumper, bonnet and corner panelling. It’s a sleek face that draws attention; a unique design setting it apart from other rivals nicely. Sometimes the Honda, Nissan and Toyota designs can look a little similar. LED Rear headlights polarise as a main focal point on a dark winter’s night. Proton has also equipped the side mirrors with inbuilt indicators for added safety and sophistication. As a compact, racy design, the Proton Suprima S boasts nice alloys, a rear spoiler and a deep front air dam with large air ducts – just what you need to make a performance statement. Atlantic Blue, Fire Red, Tranquility Black, Genetic Silver, and Solid White are the striking colours that complete the brand new modern Suprima S.
Multi Point Injection is what sends the 91 Octane fuel through the lines for ignition, and the blend of air and fuel mix is refined and ready for clean combustion and maximum power. The 1.6-litre Turbo engine puts out a sprightly 103 kW at 5000 rpm, and the flat torque curve peaks and sits on 205 Nm from 2000 through to 4000 rpm. Having the punch coming on strong in the mid-range ensures that there is plenty of power for the occasion. Whether it’s accelerating from the lights, passing slower traffic or climbing an incline, the Proton Suprima performs very well. An elastic feel to the engine is reminiscent of some of the earlier Saab Turbo engines. Put the Suprima S through the 0-100 km/h test and it can complete the sprint in under 10 seconds. Paddles shifters guide the engine power through to the road – seven gears in total via the Pro Tronic transmission.
Travelling in the Suprima S is roomy and stylish. The dash layout impresses with its nicely sculptured design and simple layout. It surprised me to see how luxurious the cabin in the GXR model is. If you’re going to get a Suprima S, for the money spent, why not go for the GXR model which has the nicer leather seats. Cloth upholstery is standard in the Proton Suprima S GX model. Even the GX model gains some excellent equipment which includes: a remote keyless entry, central locking, an alarm, engine immobiliser SRS dual front airbags, SRS dual side airbags – front seats, SRS dual curtain airbags – front and rear, pre-tensioner seat belts, reverse sensors, USB, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, steering wheel audio controls, air conditioning, a CD audio system with four speakers and a headlamp-on buzzer that sounds when you have turned the engine off.
If you can get yourself into the Proton Suprima S GXR, then there are a few more bells and whistles. Front and rear parking sensors, GPS navigation, automatic rain sensing wipers, automatic climate control, extra front tweeter speakers on the A-pillar, automatic headlights, an Infotainment System, electric folding side mirrors and cruise control are other items that make the journey even more pleasurable.
Proton has really excelled in getting the Suprima S right up to the best safety standards. A five-star safety result in crash testing is proof that this is a well-built car. Some of the safety items include: daytime running lights, LED indicators on the side mirrors, ESC, ABS, EBD, TCS and front active headrests.
Ride comfort is good, and rear seat leg room is also good. Boasting 60:40 split folding rear seats, there is plenty of flexibility when it comes to loading up the Proton Suprima S with luggage. Door pockets, cup holders and other storage areas around the cabin make for a functional cabin area. When the rear seats are up in place, 358 litres is of luggage space is available.
Sitting on 205 rubber, a nice set of wheels and with a rear spoiler and a nice eye-catching design, the new Proton Suprima S is a pleasant drive. Proton offers a 5-year free scheduled servicing factory backed warranty and 24 hours of roadside assistance, so that’s a pretty concise effort for getting you into a very affordable new car.
