When it comes to the battle of the best Hot Hatch, the Renault Megane R.S is first choice for many. The car’s combination of agile handling, a nice revvy 2.0-litre turbo engine and the sexy three-door sporty exterior are some of the most likeable features that the Megane R.S 265 provides. Available in five exterior colours (my favourite, Metallic Mercury) you’re going to look great on the streets in a freshened up 2014 Renault Megane R.S 265.
This is a very fast hot hatch, and not just in a straight line. A maximum speed of 255 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of six seconds is quick by anyone’s opinion, but the Megane R.S is also very rapid through the corners. Now with even more power from an engine that sits on a chassis with stiffer springs, stiffer dampers and anti-roll bars for razor-sharp handling, Renault’s ultimate Hot Hatch is wonderfully connected to the road. The 2.0-litre 16-valve turbocharged petrol engine boasts a maximum of 195 kW at 5500 rpm, while maximum torque is 360 Nm at 3000 rpm. A quick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox applies the power to the road via a limited slip differential, and the combined cornering ability and all-out pace is hard to better in the Hot Hatch class. Stopping power is intense, as the Renault Megane R.S Cup Chassis incorporates Brembo 4 piston callipers over large ventilated discs at the front wheels, and solid 290mm x 11mm discs at the rear. The front wheels track at 1588 mm and the rear at 1545 mm, so the wider front track adds to the Megane’s class-leading road holding.
For some other interesting stats on the racy Megane R.S 265: the car weighs in at around 1374 kg, boot volume is 344 litres with the rear seats up and the car’s standard alloy wheels are 18-inch beauties. Rear seat room is a little cramped, but I guess the main reason you’ll buy one of these is the sheer thrill of the drive. The Megane RS 265 gets split-folding rear seats, so the 991-litres of luggage space with the rear seats folded down is super if it’s just the two of you heading away for a weekend.
Renault gives the Megane R.S 265 plenty of muscular curves, flared wheel arches and gloss black accents on the door mirrors, door handles and the chrome detailing around the LED daytime running lights. A nice deep front air dam and that unique Megane back end with a spoiler sets you apart on the road. There is a choice of three 19-inch alloy wheel designs which include red pinstripe, silver stripes or diamond cut rims. I’m always one for opting for the wider rims to make your car look even sportier and even sexier.
Inside the Renault Megane R.S 265 versions is a freshened up interior design that always looks good and makes the driver feel very comfortable, and at home, behind the wheel. There are plenty of nice techie features on the dash, and the monitor display on the dash of the Cup, and Cup+ models provides a cool real-time performance information update as you drive. There are three levels of specification for the new Renault Mégane R.S. 265. The Cup version offers Renault Sport cloth seats, an Arkamys sound system, an R.S. Monitor, Bluetooth and red interior detailing. The limited edition Cup+ provides more leather in the form of the R.S. leather bucket seats, a fixed glass sunroof and sharp-looking ‘red decal’ exterior highlights. The Renault Megane R.S. 265 Trophy+ boasts special R.S leather seats, swaps the R.S. Monitor for an integrated Satellite Navigation system, offers front and rear parking sensors, has a rear camera, adds a fixed glass roof and adds black 19-inch alloys.
Two other very special models are available, so for more rarity take a look at the Red Bull and Sport Limited Edition models. You get an impression inside the Megane R.S that you’re inside a Hot Hatch cabin that’s more than just a little special. Other features include: a Renault Card Key entry, dual zone climate control air conditioning, optional front and rear centre consoles with armrests and cup holders, automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensors, electric front windows with an anti-pinch function and one-touch control, a multi-function trip computer, auxiliary and USB inputs with fingertip controls, Bluetooth phone pairing with audio streaming, an optional integrated satellite navigation system with a 7-inch screen, 2D/3D maps, turn-by-turn instructions and SD card for easy map updates.
Loaded with very up-to-date features, the new Renault Megane R.S is a safe drive. Driver and front passenger airbags, driver and front passenger anti-submarining airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags, and front and rear curtain airbags are standard on all the models. ABS, EBA, EBD, sports-tuned Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with three modes (normal / sport / off), an Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) system, a Limited Slip Differential (LSD), Bi-Xenon directional headlights, automatic dusk sensing headlights, L.E.D daytime running lights mounted in front bumper, front parking sensors, rear parking sensors, a rear view camera and cruise control with a speed limiter are all standard features that have you travelling in one of the safest Hot Hatch environments. A five-star was awarded to the Megan R.S in crash testing results.
As far as reliability goes, the Megane R.S has been a reliable model for Renault, and a 3 year/unlimited km with 24 Hour Roadside Assistance warranty comes with each new model.
