Ready to set your drive alight in a brand new Alpine A110? Well it has been worth the wait; this is a car that performs really well and handles just like it looks.
A bit of history about the Alpine: Established in 1955 by Renault dealer and rally driver, Jean Rédélé, the Alpine brand found fame for its innovative, lightweight designs. The first Alpine car won a number of prestigious races on the European and international motorsport circuits. The company Alpine was bought by Renault in 1973, and vehicles bearing the Alpine nameplate were produced up until 1995. Recently, the Alpine name has been revived with the launch of the awesome new Alpine A110. Hot looks and loads of power in what’s a lightweight package keep the driver enthralled with great fun dynamics and performance.
I can’t argue with the design; with the modern lines and detailing harking back to the very first blue Alpine 110’s gorgeous looks, the latest coupe is a stunner. The 2019 Alpine 110 is capable of 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds, and the featherweight, aluminium-built A110 is powered by a mid-rear mounted four-cylinder 1.8-litre turbo engine that generates an exhilarating 190 kW and 320 Nm of torque. Top speed is said to be around 250 km/h. This exhilarating performance is not only thanks to turbo power but also the lightweight construction – and with 171.50 kW/tonne available it’s all miles of smiles in the new Renault Alpine roadster coupe.
The maximum torque of 320 Nm is on tap from just 2000 rpm. Acceleration from 80-to-120 km/h takes just 2.6 seconds, equalling the 2.6 seconds it takes to sprint from 110-to-140 km/h. Passing manoeuvres are done-and-dusted in no time at all, making the Alpine A110 a thrilling drive. Power delivery is quickly put through to the road via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and you have paddle shifters to use when manual mode is selected.
The A110 offers a choice of three driving modes: Normal, Sport or Track. The driving mode selector adjusts the throttle response, steering assistance, gearshift speeds, exhaust sound and ESC levels to suit your driving mood. Take things at a more relaxed pace, and you’ll love the economy, too. Capable of less than 7 litres/100 km, this is a performance sports-coupe with a difference. Also part of the modern Alpine 110 drive are other driver aids that include ESC, TC, ABS and EBA. Hill-start assist also comes as standard.
Inside the low-slung coupe it’s all good. You sit low down in the specially designed Sabelt bucket seats. Both seats weigh in at just 13.1 kg – talk about weight savings! The steering wheel has a mode selector button on it and is made of soft leather. Being adjustable in both the rake and height, the driver can get comfy for a long track day session or just a tour between cities. A floating centre console and the car’s exposed seat brackets reflect the A110’s lightweight construction and sense of artistic flair, while climate control air-conditioning and smart phone connectivity ensure the A110 is as effortless and up-to-date to use as it is thrilling to drive.
Interior style continues with features including a sports steering wheel with an Alpine Blue logo in the centre, a leather-and-microfibre-wrapped rim with a “12 o’clock” marker and Alpine Blue topstitching which just looks so gorgeous. The adjustable steering wheel height and depth keeps you nice and comfortable. An electrochromic interior rear-view mirror, aluminium pedals, an aluminium driver footrest, an aluminium passenger footrest, Sabelt leather/microfiber seats, an aesthetic black and matte charcoal interior all boasts nice modern detailing, and the stainless steel door sills and Alpine plaque floor mats with the Alpine emblem embedded into them is classy. Body-colour trim on the upper portion of the door panel is striking, along with the contrasting Alpine Blue stitching on the instrument panel, seats and door panels. There is a French flag on the driver and passenger door panels too, so yes you’re looking “avoir l’air bien”!
The 2018 Renault Alpine A110 isn’t just about speed. It comes with plenty of comforts and luxury. Automatic climate air-conditioning, keeps you lovely and cool when the driving pace is hot. A four-speaker Focal stereo has flax cone technology for a great audio quality, while the car’s telemetrics data can be accessed via the 7-inch central touchscreen. The Alpine Telemetrics enables the driver to record lap times at track days and store performance driving data. It also displays real-time technical information such as power and torque output, turbo boost pressure and engine and tyre temperatures. The touchscreen also boasts multimedia functions that include in-car entertainment, smart phone mirroring for Android Auto and iOS and satellite navigation. The digital graphics are clear with nice colour and definition. Two USB ports and Bluetooth technology keep ahead with the modern times.
Some other nice Alpine 110 design features include LED taillights, 18-inch alloys, a rear diffuser with fins, folding wing mirrors, rear parking sensors, French flags on C-pillars, LED tail lights with sweeping turn signal indicators. There is a 96-litre capacity front boot and 100-litre capacity rear boot, so let’s just keep in mind that this is no family wagon!
The new Renault Alpine 110 has very agile handling and is a quick car on any road. Keeping with the times, the safety list of modern features is long and includes: emergency brake assist, an anti-lock braking system, cruise control with speed limitation, hill-start assist, a disconnectable stability control system, driver and passenger airbags, a tyre inflation and repair kit with a compressor and cartridge standard.
