Ssangyong’s Korando is a stylish SUV that has just had a fine makeover. This upgraded version is nice on the eyes and has all of the right credentials to make anyone on the lookout for a small/medium SUV very happy. You wouldn’t call it a hard-core off-road SUV, but it’ll comfortably tackle backroads, light off-roading and picnic areas in combination with curb hopping on the school run. With an impressive engine and five-star safe the 2020 Ssangyong Korando is ready for the taking.
Diesel powered, the ELX and Ultimate Korando models make use of a very nice, smooth and powerful new 1.6-litre turbo-diesel with 324 Nm of torque blended with a peak output of 100 kW. The lusty power makes for smooth open road cruising, and with the nice smooth 6-speed auto getting about town and city is a breeze. You can expect excellent fuel economy, with a combined cycle pretty close to 6 litres/100 km or less. You can easily tow a fully laden trailer up to 2-tonnes in weight with the new Korando, so if you need a small SUV that can tow then this should be high on your list of go-tos. It is a class leader in this respect.
All Korando models can also be had with the peppy new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. In this form you get 120 kW of power at 5,500 rpm, and pulling power that equates to 280 Nm of torque between 1,500-4,000 rpm. You should get around 8-litres/100 km fuel economy, and you get the choice of a 6-speed manual as standard or an optional 6-speed auto to run with.
The Ssangyong Korando really is a well sorted SUV that rides pretty well around choppy city streets and canters around our motorways. The stiffened chassis is also better suited to quicker high speed action. The sturdy build quality shines through on the way it rides in an unfazed, balanced manner. Diesel engine noise is very well muted, with a gravely tone reserved for quick overtaking and hard acceleration.
Cabin space is great for a small SUV, and there is no shortage of storage space and electronic power points. Electric windows, automatic air-conditioning and a decent sound system go a long way to making a long journey enjoyable. It’s a well-equipped vehicle that has been laid out nicely with plenty of fine trimmings and style.
Seat comfort and space is excellent, and the cabin has an upmarket feel. The dash is dominated by glossy black surfaces and you get a great atmosphere at night with the Korando’s choices of mood lighting. An 8 or 9-inch touchscreen gives you access to all of the new Korando’s infotainment technology. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, while Spotify, satellite navigation and phone connections are all available. The 10.25-inch digital driver’s display on the Ultimate model is superb.
But, back to seat comfort: front seat occupants get loads of comfort and space, and the driver has plenty of seat and steering wheel adjustment for getting the right fit happening. But if you head to the back seat the space and comfort remains superb. This is one of the SUVs on the market that boasts genuine comfort for three adults across the back seat, so note here another big selling point. The rear seats are also reclining, as well as being split folding for more options for carrying cargo. Leather seats with accented stitching looks really classy and is available on premium models.
Boot space with the rear seats upright is very good for its class (551 litres), and once the powered tailgate has opened fully (Ultimate)you have a really handy loading space with a flat lip for easy access. Fold the rear seats completely flat and the cargo space grows to 1248 litres.
The new Ssangyong Korando boasts a lot more new hidden camera technology to aid safe driving, so things like automatic braking, a reversing camera and blind spot monitoring are all part of the new Korando package. LED headlight technology ensures that you are seen by other road users, and a five-star safety result is all the proof in the pudding you’ll need for enjoying peace-of-mind motoring.
So the 2020 Ssangyong Korando kicks things off with the EX model where you can only get with the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Here the snazzy-looking Korando sits on 17-inch alloy wheels, boasts a rear fog lamp and even has projector levelling headlights as standard. An 8-inch touchscreen, smart audio system with DAB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto boasts six-speaker sound. Power windows, smart fabric seats and a sliding front centre armrest is also part of the well-equipped EX package.
