Even big SUVs and Utes are looking quite snazzy these days, and, after a day in the dust or mud, they scrub up to even look glitzy enough to roll through the middle of town on a Friday night. SsangYong has their latest version of the Rexton available now, and it’s a goodie. The 2022 SsangYong Rexton SUV is well priced, offers a huge boot when the third row seat is down, provides decent off-road ability, can tow big loads, offers reasonable fuel economy, and has a load of great creature comforts for any drive on or off the tar seal.
The new Rexton SUV is based on the latest Musso Ute. It comes in two models. The Rexton ELX has a price tag well below its nearest rivals. At around $48k new it is a real deal and comes on a nice set of 18-inch alloys, and standard features like: dual-zone climate control, leather seats that are electric and boast heating and cooling functions, a large centre dash touchscreen with all the latest gizmos, and a 10.25 inch digital driver’s display.
With all these goodies available in the ELX, the Ultimate has to have some great additions for the extra $7k that it will cost you. That said, the Ultimate Rexton’s price tag is very competitive against any of its rivalling luxury SUVs. The Ultimate SUV adds to the ELX feature list things like very snazzy 20-inch chrome rims, a wireless phone charging pad, a classier Nappa leather upholstery, driver’s seat memory functions, a sunroof, illuminated scuff plates, nice ambient interior lighting, front doors that can be locked by touch, a powered tailgate, and a handy 360 degree reversing camera. Not bad at all!
The Rexton is a big SUV, at least it looks it curb side. As yet, the Rexton still hasn’t been independently crash-tested by our ANCAP team or by the equivalent EuroNCAP crash testers. However, both the ELX and the Ultimate variants bring plenty to the table when it comes to safety features. You will find that braking assist, autonomous emergency braking with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, nine airbags, and trailer sway control are standard items. Cruise control is also present but not the adaptive cruise control sort, nor the lane-keeping assist feature you’ll find in the smaller SsangYong Korando Ultimate versions.
Climb inside the 2022 SsangYong Rexton and the cabin is a classy experience. Seating is comfortable and spacious, particularly for those in the front row. As mentioned above, the Ultimate even has heated and ventilated front seats with Nappa leather and quilted side bolsters that feel superbly supportive and supple. Ultimate models also get the quilting effect over the dashboard and doors.
Lined up against the Ford Everest Titanium, the Rexton is an absolute steal – being $20k less. The best of Ford’s Everest, the Isuzu MU-X LS-T, the best of the Toyota Fortuner models, and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Exceed all jostle for best premium SUV which has been based on a Ute platform. SsangYong’s Rexton is a beaut, and it’s also the cheapest to buy in this line-up!
The ute-based 4WD SUV isn’t a new phenomenon; it’s been around for a long time on our roads, and as a premium vehicle to haul the growing family about they do a great job – which the new Rexton also does very well. In the Rexton you get a well-appointed middle row that has been as nicely trimmed as the front seats, and they are a pretty decent place to sit. Ultimate versions even get heated seats in the second row. The centre backrest can fold down to become an armrest with cup holders and a handy storage area. All rear-seat passengers in the second and third row get decent air vents, two USB sockets, and a 12-volt socket for accessories. To get into the third row seats requires you to fold the middle row backrest down and then roll it forward to provide a decent gap to climb through. Third row seating space is best kept for the kids under 12-years old.
Not much cargo space is behind the upright third row seats either. Folded into the floor, these seats create a two-tier load space. In this state, there is a healthy 641 litres of boot now available, which expands to 1806 litres with the second and third rows folded flat. You can also raise the floor so it lines up with the folded seats to create a flat surface right the way through to the front seats, and when you do this a load up to 1.7 m long can be carried with the tailgate closed.
The new SsangYong Rexton can tow up to 3500 kg with a braked trailer, like when you need to have more cargo space for the family camping trip. Fire the 2.2-litre diesel engine up and take this out for a drive, where you’ll find the new Rexton feels punchy and swift enough off the mark, especially considering this weighs in as a 2.3 tonne SUV. It gets up to motorway speeds quite speedily and with little fuss. At 80–120 km/h there is plenty of power in reserve for any overtaking manoeuvres. Once underway, the Rexton delivers a refined engine note married with a well-sorted 4×4 diesel powertrain. This 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine produces up to 148 kW of power and 441 Nm of torque, delivered to the RWD or 4WD selection via an eight-speed automatic gearbox made by Hyundai. These outputs are gruntier than the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the Isuzu MU-X competitors, both of which have more ccs under the bonnet. Fuel economy for the big Rex should average out lower than 9 litres/100 km for the most part.
Like most ute-based SUVs, the Rexton can’t hide the rolls through the corners nor all the bumps in the road, however it behaves predictably and has a solid hold over the road. The steering feels light and easy about town, with a noticeable solidity at higher speeds bringing confidence to the drive. The Rexton is tough and a serious off-road vehicle with its rugged body-on-frame chassis. RWD is the norm until you select high- or low-range 4WD via a dial on the centre console. It rides on a 10-link independent rear suspension with wishbones up at the front and coil springs for every corner. It also comes with anti-rollover protection if you push it too hard. Braking is strong and well-planted at any road speed.
Like all new SsangYong vehicles, the Rexton has a 15,000 km/12 month service schedule with capped pricing unless you need a repair. You will also enjoy a 7-year warranty, a 7-year roadside assistance plan, and the afore mentioned 7-years of capped-price servicing.
Check one out I’d say! The 2022 SsangYong Rexton has a great price tag, fantastic equipment levels, and decent 2.2-litre diesel performance. The cabin is also commendably comfortable and quiet to ride inside, appointed with all the top features we’ve become rather accustomed to.
