The 2022 Subaru WRX is landing on our shores shortly, so ready yourself and catch a glimpse of what to expect. This new Subaru WRX is using a global platform, enabling a cheaper build, better critiqued safety capabilities and a platform that will offer a great level of driving dynamics for the high performance Impreza.
Having kept the new model’s exterior similar in appearance to the outgoing one means that the same lines are recognizable, and the little tweaks with new racy looks are attractive and not too garish. A good thing because in times past, Japanese cars, including Subaru, had sometimes brought a new look that just doesn’t sit well with the fans. So good job again with this one, Subaru, and not a scary looking WRX for the fans.
Fire up the 2.4 Turbo, and you’ll discover just how quick this beast is. The 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer motor produces 200 kW of power, and 350 Nm of torque between 2000 and 5200 rpm. That’s a flatter longer torque curve, meaning that there is even more performance and muscle to play with when you want it. That’s enough grunt to scamper through the 0-100 km/h dash in less than six seconds. Again, 250 km/h top speeds will be easily ticked off the to-do list, on a track of course! Subaru have added adaptive dampering into the mix, so top of the line models will boast a magnificent chassis and traction technology as part of the package, all pointing towards holding the AWD WRX sweetly down on the road over any road surfaces. A new electronically controlled wastegate and a bypass also improves the new car’s engine response.
The inside of the car is where you’ll find appearances have changed quite a lot. The dramatically updated interior is a good thing. Everything looks really good, nice and stylish and boasting right up-to-date infotainment technology. It’s definitely a cabin you’ll be wanting to spend time in, making the new WRX an exciting touring car that just loves to eat up the miles. Like an M3 or Audi RS 4, the Subaru WRX can accommodate back seat passengers in comfort. Back there, the seats are nice and supple, and you’ll find some ports for electronic mobile devices.
Sitting in the front there is a nice arrangement laid out on the dash. Leg room is good here, and when in the driver’s seat you’ll appreciate the expansive adjustment in the steering wheel and powered seat. It’s easy to get yourself into the right driving position, with the WRX providing a nice feel to its superbly satisfying drive and making it an enjoyable car to pilot.
In the middle of the dash is an infotainment system that is quite a large unit, and it strikes me as being graphically stylish, with an in-dash elegance that fits in with the scene. Its vertical position in the dash works well, and all the best features you want as part of the infotainment arrangement are present media connectivity, maps, radio, phone, an extra app suite, car info and My Subaru data. Subaru also give you the option of going for a split screen display if you don’t like the one-piece. I’ve always liked a two piece bikini but, in the case of the touchscreen, the one-piece unit looks nice. The standard sound system goes off, but with the 11-speaker premium option your audio is simply stunning.
A few new air intakes about the body are stylish additions, as well as being an aerodynamic enhancement. Of course the obligatory large bonnet scoop is unmistakably WRX, and it’s ready to suck a whole lot of clean air into the engine in order to create huge power and torque. The new WRX is 74 mm longer, 31 mm wider, 7 mm lower, and it has a 22 mm longer wheelbase than the model it replaces.
Base models get a revised six-speed manual gearbox, and in this form you really do feel like a slick rally champ. The flagship WRX will get the sports automatic (just quietly, it’s a CVT but better than you might expect), making this a slick drive for the more refined driver who still loves velocity and acceleration in action. The new auto is leagues apart from any other CVT Subaru unit you might have encountered. The auto is also linked to a more advanced AWD system, with a torque control system of 45:55 front-to-rear and split vectoring. Torque vectoring also shifts power left and right as necessitated by driving habits, road and weather conditions. Subaru quotes a 28 per cent increase in torsional rigidity, a 75 per cent increase in suspension mounting point rigidity, and a revised suspension geometry with revised components for reduced body roll and improved handling. All in all, a spectacular performance machine.
Top end Subaru WRX models are loaded with kit, you get adaptive dampers which control power output, suspension and steering feel. An option of saving individual driver settings keeps the settings that you like, so that if you get back into the car after someone else has been driving it, you can simply reset your favourite driving mode at the touch of a button. Recaro seats with suede material makes the top model seats a superb place to be. There are other cloth options as well.
Safety features are a strong point of Subaru, and with the latest model it is no different. A reversing camera, heads-up displays, parking sonars front and back, adaptive cruise control, a strengthened safety cage, lane centring and automatic emergency steering are just some of the excellent features in the new WRX.
