Subaru has a very strong following in both Australia and New Zealand; and I guess it’s because Kiwis and Aussies have a greater understanding of what it means to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life and head off for an adventure. The Subaru legend has always provided models blessed with AWD, reliability and comfort, so Subarus have been very popular with those who enjoy a good long distance drive off to the ski slopes or mountain trails.
New for 2016 is the latest Subaru Outback Diesel. Having the wagon design means that, for practical reasons, the new Outback Diesel is a roomy and very handy vehicle to own. Luggage space grows to colossal proportions when the rear seats are laid flat, and there are numerous storage spaces for carrying extra things. Rear seat leg room is above average for its class, so if you need a spacious interior for tall and leggy teenagers or adults, the Subaru Outback Diesel Wagon is always going to be able to provide comfortable transport for this sort of passenger.
The driver’s space is first rate, and the level of seat and steering wheel adjustment enables great flexibility for all sorts of body shapes and sizes. This is one 2016 wagon that will keep you comfortable on the long journey. The seats have been designed to support and cushion the human body with just the right amounts of pressure across the lower back and buttocks area to keep you feeling fresh – even hours into the journey. Ventilation throughout the cabin is a strong point of the Outback interior, and the adjustments for warmer and cooler temps throughout the cabin are quickly brought about by the powerful zoned climate air-conditioning and ventilation system.
Modern technology inside the Subaru Outback Diesel ensures the journey remains interesting and entertained. All the usual features are there; things like dual-zone air-conditioning, front and side demisters, DataDot Security, an Immobiliser Security System, One touch lane change indicators, steering wheel controls, cruise control, Bluetooth, X-Mode Display, LCD screens, Start/Stop technology, rain sensing wipers, a powered rear gate, leather upholstery (Premium Model), electronic seat adjustment (Premium Model), a six-speaker sound system, satellite navigation (Premium), Voice Command Control, and USB and auxiliary connection points are standard features.
Safety is a strong point of the latest Outback Diesel Wagon, and even a decade ago Subaru had the crash tests mastered. Excellent five-star safety is part of the Outback experience, so all the goodies are there – active and passive. Even a pre-collision braking system and lane sway protection system is standard.
On the road, the new Subaru Outback Diesel Wagon feels solid and safe to drive. Having the AWD always present gives a very sure-footed feeling machine for all occasions. The Outback’s smooth and quiet performance is satisfying and rewarding. Powered by the sophisticated 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, the turbocharged horizontally-opposed Boxer 4-cylinder is brisk and very flexible. Fuel efficiency is aided by Start/Stop technology. In real life, you can expect around 7 litres/100 km on average, the CVT model being a little more thirsty than the six-speed manual transmission. The CVT experience is very smooth, however.
The 2.0-litre diesel boasts 110 kW of power at 3600 rpm, and 350 Nm of torque between 1600 rpm and 2800 rpm. Both CVT and six-speed manual variants can complete the 0-100 km/h dash in under ten seconds. The 148 g/km of CO2 emissions is a commendable figure for the new Outback Diesel Wagon – something that you can’t be so sure about with the Outback’s VW or Mitsubishi equivalents!
Off-road, the new Subaru Outback Diesel remains a very strong light-off roading proposition, perfect for the long way home without going to hard-out on bush bashing. Thanks to X-Mode (CVT variants only), the Subaru Outback Diesel wagon delivers even better grip and traction in low speed, slippery conditions.
For superior control and handling, the new Subaru Outback Diesel Wagon is well worth a look.
