So here is the brand new fourth generation Suzuki Jimny; and don’t I just love the funky new styling. It looks like a baby Land Rover Defender and has a coolness about the way it rolls from any angle you care to look at it. It’s as capable off-road as it is zipping along at around 100 km/h, and it does all this with credible fuel efficiency. The new 2019 Suzuki Jimny has been thoroughly updated for life in the modern world and there’s lots to like about it.
The Jimny’s cool looks are kept inside some tiny dimensions that are 3.6 metres long, 1.6 metres wide and 1.7 metres tall recognized as a three door model. The Jimny’s boxy exterior boasts excellent round LED headlights (like the first models), a full-size spare wheel, a 10 cm increase in ride height, and that gorgeous chunky design that’s available in an array of vivid colours.
Being a superb little 4×4, the new Jimny still boasts the strong ladder-frame chassis for added strength and rigidity both on-and-off the road. At speeds up to 100 km/h you can shift the vehicle into 4WD from 2WD. Then if you hit really tough terrain then you can stop the vehicle and select 4WD-Low for the real-deal 4×4 traction. The latest Jimny now has a 4WD system that can brake any of the four wheels to ensure that traction is fed to the wheels with the most grip. The front wheels, like the rear wheels, are also joined by a rigid axle so that all wheels are kept in good contact with the ground – making the Jimny incredibly apt at covering tricky off-road terrain. Both the front and rear overhang are very minimal allowing for some pretty decent entry and exit angles (even better than a Wrangler). Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control are excellent features when working your way through the steeper open country.
Take the new Suzuki Jimny out off-road and put it through its paces to see just how good this wee 4×4 actually is. You’ll be amazed – and that’s for a whole lot less money than you’ll be forking out for a flash new Discovery or Mercedes off-roader!
There is one thing that the Jimny’s small dimensions can’t hide, however, and that’s the tiny boot space. But fold the rear seats flat, and the Jimny becomes a superbly practical, load lugging two-seater. The rear of the back seats are covered with a plastic resin, so the boot has a hard wearing flat surface when the rear seats are folded down flat. You will also find a power socket, a luggage box and a toolbox compartment in the boot-space area. Put the rear seats back in place, and rear seat passengers (two adults) will find leg room fairly tight. Front seat occupants have plenty of room and comfort, however.
Interior looks are nice, simple and modern. It’s no frills really when it comes to flair, but the black plastic dash offers all the necessary mod-cons like: an infrared central touch screen which can be used while wearing gloves. There is support for Smartphone connection, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and you can also get cruise control with a speed limiter, satellite navigation, climate air conditioning, and a leather steering wheel. Spend a little more and you also get the best touchscreen, LED headlamps and sportier alloy wheels.
Safety standards have been lifted to a higher standard, and the Suzuki Jimny now boasts dual sensor brake support, lane departure warning, high beam assist, vehicle sway warning and an emergency stop signal. You also have side and curtain airbags, auto levelling headlights and headlight washers.
When driving the new Suzuki Jimny you’ll appreciate the excellent view ahead, and if you want a car that spends most of its time inside the city boundary then the small dimensions, the narrow width and the tall ride height makes this a little gem for city driving. And, then come the weekend you can scamper off for an excursion off-road, let’s say to go fishing, and you’ll have a blast! Great fun really.
Under the hood is a new petrol engine with 1.5-litre four-cylinder capacity. This engine produces 75 kW and 130 Nm which is more power and more twist than ever before. So, the big changes to the engine are its lightweight construction, more compact design, better performance and better fuel efficiency. Fuel economy is around 6.5 litres/100 km for the 5-speed manual model, and 7.0 litres/100 km for the 4-speed automatic model.
So here is your new low cost fashion statement: the brand new Suzuki Jimny 4th generation model, and it comes in a range of colour options. There are 3 two-tone colours; Kinetic Yellow with a black roof, Brisk Blue Metallic with a black roof and Chiffon Ivory Metallic with a black roof. The single-tone colours available are Jungle Green, Bluish Black Pearl, Medium Grey, Superior White and Silky Silver Metallic.
You’ll either love it or hate it, but for me I’m one of those who is quite fond of the little Jimny 4×4 and the fun drive that it provides. No, it not super quick but it is packed with loads of smiles both on the road and off it.
