The 2019 Suzuki Vitara Series II has arrived with its new up-to-date features and design cues. It looks quite the ‘Hungry Jacks’ burger really, making itself more than just a simple meal in the light SUV segment. It’s quite a funny thing really, because the latest Suzuki Vitara is much more of a compact SUV in its looks, and has downsized a bit from the Grand Vitara of old which had more of that chunky off-road appeal. Much more racy in it appearance, the updated 2019 Vitara is lower slung and more car-like giving it the looks and appearance which should appeal to a wider audience of buyers.
It definitely does look distinctive and different. The most substantial change is that the base model non-turbo model drops its scalloped-bar grill to adopt the same vertically divided grill like the Turbo models have. The Turbo’s grill gets a bit of chrome detailing to set it apart. Also, the new Vitara’s front bumper lighting mantles look more aggressive, and the rear air diffuser has been restyled. The new look LED daytime running lights marry attractively with the reworked bumper.
There are three models available which are powered by two engine variants carried over from the previous model: the 1.6-litre Vitara packs 86 kW of power and 156 Nm of torque, and the 1.4-litre turbocharged Vitara Turbo and Vitara Turbo AWD offer 103 kW of power and 220 Nm of torque. Even from reading the figures, it’s the Turbo engine that gives the more exciting performance. New Suzuki Vitara buyers in Australia can snaffle a Vitara from between $22,490 and $33,990. The slight increases in price over the Series I is due to the addition of some new features.
The Suzuki Vitara has always been very good at nice tight cornering, and the Series II is no different. The Vitara returns the driver with a nice confident feeling when pushed through the corners quickly, thanks to sharp steering. And, with the addition of Turbo and AWD the Vitara has loads of accomplished grip in all weathers. Base models with their 85 kW of power feel pleasant enough to drive, they are responsive and quiet while returning decent fuel economy. Turbo models are impressively quick for what is supposed to be a compact SUV, and you can easily get from zero and into naughtiness in well under 10 seconds. So, Turbo models come in FWD and AWD offerings, whereas the base model is FWD only.
Slip inside the new Vitara’s interior and you’ll find the touchscreen has been updated with its new 4.2-inch LCD screen offering plenty of goodies. All models get DAB digital radio, air-conditioning, Bluetooth for your phone, and cruise control. Suzuki has added some more soft-touch interior surfaces, and more contrast-colour accenting to make the Vitara more stylish and attractive. If you then move across into the Vitara Turbo interior you’ll enjoy the very nice new suede/faux leather seating. Top of the range AWD models can also get satellite navigation.
Safety features have been bolstered with the arrival of an on-board camera and laser-based forward-detection system for Turbo models. Rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, blind sport monitoring, EBD, brake override and lane-departure warning make this a very well equipped compact SUV for the money.
Boot space is good, and there are cubby holes off to the side of the floor for storing little things like dog leads, bottles or what have you. There is also handy storage underneath the floor. Fold the rear seats flat and you have excellent space for carrying loads of luggage. Other handy storage compartments about the new Vitara’s cabin make life easy for families. Door storage bins front and rear, a decent centre console storage compartment and a glovebox can be used for drink bottles, wallets, phones, books you name it.
Seating is pleasant, and you’ll be happily surprised with the way the new Vitara can accommodate three adults across the rear with relative ease. If you are the one in the middle you’ll be only slightly squished.
For a light, compact SUV it’s hard to overlook the new Vitara’s driving appeal and price.
