If Australia’s “Overlander” magazine has rated the Suzuki Grand Vitara as the best compact SUV numerous times, then it’s got to be a great all-rounder. A drive in the latest Suzuki Grand Vitara gives evidence as to why the crew from “Outlander” might come to their verdict.
First of all, there is the very capable 4High + 4High Lock + 4Low Lock + Neutral 4WD system. Put simply, the level of traction from the Suzuki 4WD system gives the Grand Vitara the ability to go anywhere you care to track in Australia.
Smooth power comes from a grunty 2.4-litre petrol, VVT engine, which, upon careful review, boasts 122 kW of power and 225 Nm of torque. It’s not as thirsty as you would think, delivering around 8.9 litres/100 km in five-speed manual form. A V6 and a diesel alternative are other gems.
Relaxed driving appeal with features like ABS brakes, EBD, ESP and BA provide quite a safety orientated package. Electric windows and door mirrors, six airbags, air-conditioning, a four-speaker MP3 compatible stereo, Bluetooth communications and cruise control all complete the modern Suzuki Grand Vitara’s style.
The Suzuki Grand Vitara is a top, top machine.
A quick glance at the distinctive Suzuki Grand Vitara’s exterior gives the onlooker an impression of rugged, authentic SUV beauty. Whether you hit the city streets or power over rough Outback terrain, the Suzuki Grand Vitara will take you all places in loads of comfort and style.
Sweet power plants are worth mentioning, and the engines used in the Suzuki Grand Vitara are such a find that they are worth crowing about. At base camp, when you review the Suzuki Grand Vitara 3-door and 5-door models, you’ll see a peppy 2.4-litre, petrol unit that knows how to pick up the pace quickly and cruise effortlessly. Smooth power delivery gives these Grand Vitara models a nice, relaxed feel. Boasting 122kW of power and 225Nm of torque, it has a very good blend of both power and economy. Fuel consumption, on average, is only 8.9 litres/100 km –for the five-speed manual. The 2.4-litre engine is capable of towing an 1850 kg braked trailer, making it a super versatile set of wheels.
A new 3.0-litre, petrol motor provides the Suzuki Grand Vitara Prestige with 165 kW of gorgeous V6 soundtracks that sing their own praises of lusty, raw power. Open road touring is refined, while getting down to business to tow the family caravan is easy. Torque figures reveal why the Prestige does the business so well; peak torque is 284 Nm located in the midrange count of 3500 rpm.
A diesel option is available. The Suzuki Grand Vitara Diesel has the torquiest motor in the Vitara line-up. With 300 Nm of torque from an efficient 1.8-litre turbo-diesel you are going to be smiling all the way to the pump or should that be to the bank. Review your sums with the promise of 7.0 litres/100 km frugality, on average.
Sticky situations are handled without a sweat in a Suzuki Grand Vitara. Punching well above its weight, the Suzuki Grand Vitara heads Outback, leaving bigger 4x4s behind on slippery tracks and treacherous paths. Traction control and locking low-ratio lock means that you have some premium go forward in the toughest conditions.
Modern on the outside and contemporary on the inside, a Suzuki Grand Vitara is right up with the play. Ample storage space, split folding rear seats to the floor level and below deck cargo storage all adds up to a very versatile and practical vehicle for work and pleasure. Opt for the Prestige models, and you will enjoy a full leather interior that includes heated front seats, automatic climate control and a micron air-filtration system. The stereo is great and it has AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA compatibility. The XM, satellite-ready, four-speaker audio system with steering wheel mounted audio controls is a real blast, particularly if you like quality loud music like I do. You can even get a 6-disc in-dash CD changer with seven-speakers that include 2 tweeters and 1 subwoofer.
Other features include power windows and doors, cruise control, auxiliary power outlets, a retractable cargo cover, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, as well as a power tilt-and-slide sunroof. There is even an optional HomeLink® wireless control system to operate your garage door and other remote items. One nice feature that the Suzuki Grand Vitara has is the Suzuki SmartPass feature which is built into the keyless entry. There is no more pressing buttons to unlock or start your vehicle; the SmartPass automatically unlocks your doors without you touching the remote.
Safety items on the Suzuki Grand Vitara include anti-lock brakes, dual stage driver and passenger front and side curtain airbags, plus rear seat curtain airbags. Daytime running lights, a rear child seat LATCH system, rear door child safety locks and a tire pressure monitoring system are all provided, too.
