You’d just about have to be blind if you haven’t noticed the number of Suzuki Swifts on Australia’s roads these days. However, you won’t see too many of the Suzuki Swift RE.2, the limited edition version of this very popular hatchback.
The Suzuki Swift RE.2 is designed to add more than just a hint of sportiness to the experience of driving the Swift. You may think of the regular Suzuki Swift as a city hatch but the Suzuki Swift RE.2 add some touches that make this little car feel and act more like a rally car. In fact, just driving around the city won’t even scratch the surface of what the Suzuki Swift RE.2 can do.
Of course, what people will notice most of all about the Suzuki Swift RE.2 is the way it looks. Yes, you’ve got the same punchy, compact looks of the regular Swift, but the Suzuki Swift RE.2 also adds in a rear roof spoiler, rear sports lights, front fog lights and the special RE.2 side stripes as it sits proudly on its 16-inch alloy wheels. And those racing stripes along the sides end in a chequered pattern – the sign of a winner. The racing stripes look particularly sizzling against red, but if red with racing stripes is too much of a cliché for you, there are six other colours to choose from (as well as two shades of red).
But what the Suzuki Swift RE.2 can do doesn’t stop with the looks. The chassis and suspension of the Suzuki Swift RE.2 has been tuned to make this car a fun one to drive. The rigid chassis and the dynamic suspension tuning make a combination that is responsive and comfortable, and gives great on-road feel. And let’s throw in all the other driver assistance features on the Suzuki Swift RE.2 just for good measure: electronic stability control and ABS brakes with brake assist and EBD.
What’s beneath the bonnet of the Suzuki Swift RE.2? Here, you’ll find the trusty and thrifty 1.4-litre petrol engine with variable valve technology. This is a small engine to suit a small car, and 70 kW of power and 130 Nm of torque at maximum are more than enough to get plenty of fun out of your Suzuki Swift RE.2. Five-speed manual transmission and four-speed auto are available, and the auto transmission has a hill hold function, meaning that when you start off on a slope, the brake pressure stays on for a few moments after you take your foot off the brake pedal.
The Suzuki Swift RE.2 scooped the full five stars in ANCAP tests, making this one of the safest cars in the hatchback class. This was achieved by a number of design features. In the case of the interior, the special grey Suzuki Swift RE.2-exclusive trim on the interior (with silver stitching) will be buried behind a cocoon of billowing airbags (front, side, curtain and knee). Pretensioned seatbelts have been installed for the driver and front passenger, making sure that if the worst does happen, you’ll stay safely in the seats. Suzuki’s TECT bodyshell system which blends crumple zones to absorb impact with a tough shell to protect the occupants.
Also inside the Suzuki Swift RE.2, the steering wheel mounted audio controls for the MP3-compatible sound system with a USB input jack allows you to play any of your portable devices through the speakers. Bluetooth connectivity allows the possibility of handsfree telephone calls while you’re driving. Digitally controlled climate control in the Suzuki Swift RE.2 will keep you cool, even though the hatch itself is hot.
The Suzuki Swift RE.2 may look like a smaller car, but you’d be amazed at how much you can fit into there. This is a five-door hatch and it would made a great family car – the looks alone would make this a winner in the cool stakes for the school run, to say nothing of being a desirable vehicle for teenagers to learn to drive in. One very practical feature in the luggage compartment is the luggage board, which makes an extra shelf for hiding valuables out of sight when you park, or for stopping the eggs being crushed by the baked bean tins when you’re bringing home the groceries in style.
