Looking over the newest Toyota Prius, the design has been totally revamped, with the addition of even more high tech gear and an even more engaging design. The Toyota Prius model has been around for quite some time, so the designers have had years of tweaking and refining, which now results in a Prius with all the latest technology, packaged with nice modern styling and providing the occupants with even better ride quality. Own a new Toyota Prius and you will be driving the most economical hybrid car there is available. With its outstanding fuel economy; notably quieter and better-riding chassis; generous cargo space and significantly improved driving position, it’s hard to not like the most popular hybrid car in the world.
One of the niggles you might find with the 2016 Toyota Prius and Prius i-Tech is that they have less back seat legroom than before, and the instrumentation and offset display is slightly off-putting at first. However, with time you get used to looking at the digital speedo that is left of the driver’s direct line of sight. But that said, the latest Prius models have so much good things about the car’s ride and drive that the positives far outweigh the minor disappointments.
At the heart of the new Toyota Prius and Prius i-Tech Hatch is the VVT-i DOHC, 1.8-litre engine with a power rating of 90 kW at 5200 rpm and 142 Nm at 3600 rpm. The essential charm of the Toyota Prius is, of course, the impressive fuel economy. With 5.4 litres/100 km offered on average, the Prius goes a long way between drinks; and with a long commute and less congestion, some owners have enjoyed 4.7 litres/100 km. The car is happy enough to complete the 0-100 km/h dash in around ten seconds, and with plenty of torque in the mid-range, the driver will enjoy good passing potential for motorway work.
Inside the very modern cabin, the 2016 Prius and Prius i-Tech offer comfortable seating with more leg and headroom for front occupants. Although a couple of inches of rear legroom have been lost, the luggage area has grown a handy 14 percent (502 litres with the rear seats in place). Plenty of interior storage compartments and cup-holders are available, too.
When out on the open road, the new Toyota Prius has excellent handling skills – thanks mainly to the lower and wider stance, and the new double-wishbone rear suspension. You’ll never be able to call this a sports car; however, the hybrid Prius can be driven smartly with accurate steering and sure-footed handling characteristics.
There is no sedan version available, so what you have in a Prius is a four-door hatchback that seats five passengers. Standard features on the entry level car include: 15-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, heated mirrors, automatic LED headlights, LED running lights and taillights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, two 4.2-inch driver information screens, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, 60/40-split folding rear seat, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, voice recognition, a six-speaker audio system with a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.
The i-Tech model comes with more equipment including: 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, LED clearance lights, unique rear bumper styling, leather upholstery, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and intervention, a pre-collision warning system and automatic high beams.
Each new 2016 Toyota Prius model comes standard with front side airbags, a driver knee airbag and a passenger seat cushion airbag, full-length side curtain airbags, antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control and a rear-view camera.
For 2016, the Toyota Prius has been fully redesigned, and the latest engineering cements the Prius models as the most reliable and efficient hybrid car you can buy. If you would rather experience more power and higher space levels, Toyota also produces the very good Toyota Camry Hybrid Sedan.
