The newest Volkswagen Touareg has arrived in Australia. Beautiful and classy, the new Touareg might just be the best in its class all things considered – thanks to a fantastic turbo-diesel engine, All-Terrain capability, high-class interior style and comfort, and lots of practical features. It belongs in the same SUV class as the Discovery, BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90.
The new VW Touareg is a large, luxurious SUV, and when you climb aboard the vehicle you are greeted into leather seats that are spacious, comfortable and supportive. The attention to detail is beautiful and is evident in the accented stitching on the dash, doors and seats, and the chrome detailing and elegant styling is appealing. Check out the dash lines which are tweaked in the middle for a nice visual effect as they run around the large touch screen. Some might argue that the luxury looks a little bland compared with its competitors, however some like it understated. There are plenty of soft touch surfaces throughout the cabin.
Two HD touch screens are available and, if you can, go for the larger one which looks huge and awesome. Loaded with features like satellite navigation, phone, media, vehicle information, digital sound and App Connection keeps the latest Touareg at the top of its game. Satellite graphics are superb and can be scrolled through very quickly. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard. A digital driver’s display looks equally splendid and offers various display modes to suit the driver’s mood and intentions.
Some cool interior features include a double sun visor for the driver – perfect for keeping the sun out of your eyes when turning back and forwards between southwest and northwest as the sun sets. One of the sun visors covers the front windscreen while the other covers the driver’s side window. Simple but practical features like this can make a car a winner in my book. A wireless charging port for your phone is standard, so too are front USB and 12V ports. A glass roof does give a lovely lighting effect throughout the cabin, and kids will enjoy this along with the big side windows in the rear.
When it comes to practicality the Touareg is spacious. Both front and rear seat occupants will enjoy excellent head, shoulder and leg room. With the rear seats up there is a whopping 810 litres for swallowing luggage. Put these seats flat, and luggage space grows to 1800 litres. There are many storage compartments throughout the cabin which makes up for what is are an average size glove box and central armrest storage compartments. Huge bottle holders in the doors and decent size cup holders at the front are nice additions. If you move into the back seats you’ll find that there are two USB points and a 12V plug available – handy! Space is really good back here, and the rear seats also recline and have slide adjustment. In the boot are hooks for hanging shopping bags on, tie down points, a 12 V socket, and under floor storage space beside the space saver wheel.
R-line front seats can offer heating and cooling functions as well as a massage function, so life in the 2020 Touareg is a pretty nice deal – to put it mildly. And when it comes to finding the perfect driving position for you, the steering wheel seems almost infinitely adjustable in rake and reach, while the driver’s seat has height adjustment as well as tilt, recline and horizontal adjustment.
The 3.0-litre TDI engine for the Launch Edition Touareg is a gem. It’s loaded with 190 kW of power and then has a whopping 600 Nm of torque on tap from as low as 2250 rpm. Effortless, quiet, surefooted motoring is a guarantee in this class of car, and as you continue motoring beyond the tarmac and onto gravel road surfaces the Touareg remains one of the best SUVs for the job. It has loads of AWD grip, but the ride comfort on lesser roads is superb. An eight-speed auto links sweetly with the 4MOTION AWD system, and though ripped with muscle the big power reserves are delivered silkily quick. Emphasis is more on travel comfort than sport, but it still feels capable quick when you desire to hustle the new VW Touareg along. Out on the open road the 2020 Touareg is a nice rider with a quiet and accomplished suspension for both ride comfort and sporty flavour. Grip is great being an AWD SUV, and there is an optional air suspension if you’re looking for outstanding ride comfort.
Now, it doesn’t come in a seven seat option like the Q7 does, however you won’t go far wrong with the big VW if you are in the hunt for a premium large luxury SUV.
