Did you know that the VW Golf debuted back in 1974, making it one of the longest serving models of car that has stood the test of time (almost 50 years.) The 2022 version is VW’s eighth generation of the Golf. At the moment, there are three versions of the latest VW Golf Wagon you can buy in Australia. 2022 has the 110TSI, 110TSI Life, and the R models to choose from. As far as a functional, comfortable, and a refined mid-size wagon goes, the latest Volkswagen Golf Wagon is an impressive alternative. It holds up well against other rivals, which would be cars like the Mazda 6, Subaru Impreza, Mini Clubman, and Skoda Octavia.
Brand new Volkswagen cars have a sleekness about them, they look ritzy and glitzy with their shiny exteriors. Offering an elegant set of vivid exterior paint colours to choose between, the colours are set off nicely against plenty of chrome trim and the sexy VW alloys. My thoughts are that the new Golf Wagon is the nicest looking model in the Golf range, the long roofline and wide rear wheel arches adding to the upmarket visual impact of this very practical and comfortable version of the ever-popular Golf.
Going up against other fine wagons like the Skoda Octavia and the Mazda 6 Touring, Volkswagen has had to get all its ducks in a row with the Golf Wagon. The good news is that you get a nice driving family wagon, comfortable in the way it rides, and offering plenty of refinement. The car sits very securely on the road, feeling well planted for all everyday drives. Hustle it through the bend, and the car grips sweetly. R Wagons ride the road like a bullet train, nice and crisp with loads of grip in all weathers thanks to their AWD.
Five-star safety means that you’ll be driving a solid family wagon. A new Golf’s safety credentials are strong; they have to be! Nine airbags, pretensioned seatbelts with load limiters, an engine immobilizer, ABS, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, collision alert and avoidance systems, pedestrian avoidance and braking, driver attention detection, lane keeping active assist, park distance control, parking assistance with a graphical display, a warning of driver fatigue, electronic brake force distribution, and a hill holder assistance system are just some of the standard features for all the three versions of the Volkswagen Golf wagon that are sold here in Australia.
A Golf’s build quality is very good, and there is loads of the best technology onboard. Active cruise with distance control, keyless start, a digital instrument display and driver’s display, aux inputs for USB, phone charging sockets, Bluetooth connections, auto dipping headlights, rain sensors for the automatic wipers, daytime running lamps, a rear camera, park assistance with automatic steering, and the sports automatic gearboxes. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available and, for many people, these will be preferable to use than Volkswagen’s in-built system. The Golf’s voice control is triggered by the phrase ‘Hello Volkswagen’ and responds to easy everyday natural commands like ‘I’m cold’ or ‘navigate home’.
Current new VW Golf Wagons in Australia come with two engines. The 110TSI is found in the base model and the Life version of the Golf. With up to 110 kW being put forth from a sweet little 1.4-litre Turbo Petrol motor, boasting up to 250 Nm of torque, and running with FWD and an 8-speed automatic, the drive is refined, powerful and efficient. You should easily see 6 litres/100 km and less on a leisurely highway run. VW state that the car will average 5.9 litres on a combine town/country run. The 110TSI Golf Wagons can also tow a trailer of up to 1500 kg braked or 690 kg unbraked.
VW Golf Wagon R models, with their AWD, beefier brakes and stiffer suspension can tow up to 1700 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked. They also come with the potent VW 2.0-litre Turbo petrol motor with a 7-speed sports automatic gearbox, capable of putting out 235 kW of power and 420 Nm of torque. This is a scintillatingly good drive in a typically understated Volkswagen styling package. I like it! 0-100 km/h sprints can be over in less than 5 seconds, the car running right past 260 km/h at the top end. The amazing thing is the new Golf R Wagon drives very sedately about town with no dramas whatsoever, with little suggestion just how many horses could be unleashed in a moment. This is the perfect sleeper car that you can enjoy as a family runabout!
Interior space is excellent front and rear, the seats comfortable and supportive but bolstered well enough to keep you held in place during quick cornering. There’s also a driver’s seat massage function on Life and R versions. You have a combination of pleasant mood interior lighting settings that are custom-adjustable. The cabin feels smart and up to date. With the rear seats down, any of the 2022 Golf Wagons can tuck away 1642 litres of luggage. In two-row configuration, the cargo volume is 611 litres – very handy!
