From around $30k you could get yourself into the first of four new 2022 Volkswagen Polo Hatchbacks.  These sturdy cars are a decent drive, refined, and safe.  The practicality and efficiency of a small hatchback is what makes them so popular, and the Polo is brilliant at these, while also shining in comfort, safety, and refinement.

The GTi model is a little rocket, offering a tidy blend of thrills and refinement in its small car package.  It is the most expensive Polo (around $44k), and it’s also the thirstiest.  However, with a fuel economy average of well under 7 litres/100 km (open road around 5.5-6.0 litres/100 km) it shouldn’t prove too burdensome.  The new Polo GTi is quick, thanks to the sweet petrol 2.0-litre Turbo motor that dwells under the bonnet.  With 147 kW onboard, the Polo GTi is ready to pounce and, with a full 320 Nm of torque, the little car packs a real shove in the mid-range.  0-100 km/h can be all over in 6.5 seconds, while the new VW Polo GTi is capable of running through to a top speed of 240 km/h.

The three other versions (70TSI Life, 85TSI Life, 85TSI Style) use a 3-cylinder 1.0-litre Turbo motor with 70 kW in the 70TSI, and 85 kW in the two 80TSI variants.  The 70TSI runs with a five-speed manual gearbox, making it a robust little car to own and drive.  The gearchange is light and accurate.  It boasts a more than adequate 175 Nm of torque for hauling a load of occupants and cargo.  The other two 85 kW versions use a 7-speed sports automatic dual clutch gearbox to get the job done.  Even the 3-cylinder versions are rated for towing a braked trailer of 600 kg or a braked trailer of 1000 kg.  GTi models can tow a little bit more than this.

All of the 3-cylinder VW Polo Hatchbacks easily average less than 6 litres/100 km, getting below 5 litres/100 km out on the highways.  To drive, the small Volkswagen Polo is refined, quiet, and well-planted.  Despite the Polo being a small hatchback, VW has made it feel bigger than it really is.

Exterior looks on all 2022 Polos are quite refined and grown-up looking.  There have been tweaks to the rear bumper, taillights, and headlights.  At the front of the car, the Volkswagen Polo’s face now boasts an LED strip that runs the entire width above the bumper.  You can also get your new Polo with a black roof for a heightened visual impact.

Inside the 2022 Polo, all models boast a digital driver’s display.  It’s really easy to get comfortable behind the steering wheel, thanks to the excellent adjustment in the seats and the steering wheel.  The interior quality has gone up a notch with plenty of soft touch materials all about the front dash and upper door panels.  The build quality is good and comes with the feeling that it will last a long time.  All the ports for connecting your accessory electronic tech and mobile phones are standard on all models.  There is excellent compartment storage throughout the cabin, and each model boasts a nice centre armrest in the front – a nice touch that’s not seen in many new small hatchbacks.

One of the things you can opt to put in your new Polo is a built in dash camera.  A further upgrade can have a 360 degree camera system that not only enhances the car’s safety out on the road, but it is also activated when its stationary to act as a form of theft or vandalism protection.
