It’s one of the world’s oldest car brands and identifiably Italian. However A.L.F.A. (“[Società] Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili” )was founded by a Frenchman, Alexandre Darracq. Darracq had actually founded a separate company in 1906, Società Anonima Italiana Darracq, with Italian investors. Originally slated to be headquartered in Naples, late in 1906 Darracq took possession of land in Milan and had a factory built.
Cavaliere Ugo Stella, an aristocrat, along with the other investors, helped Darracq establish Alfa in 1910. Giuseppe Merosi, a designer, had been hired in 1909 and would go on to to design the first non Darracq vehicle, called the 24HP, before commencing a series of different cars.
Motorsport is a big part of the history of Alfa, with 1911 seeing two entries in the 1911 Targa Florio. A GP car was designed in 1914 before World War 1 paused production.
It was during this time, in 1915 actually, that Nicola Romeo effectively took over the company to build military equipment, with post war profit spending helping Romeo acquire considerable assets including railway equipment.
A car was released in 1920, called the Torpedo 20-30 HP. This was also the first car to be badged Alfa Romeo. This car would find a second place at that year’s Targa Florio at the hands of one Enzo Ferrari.
Ongoing financial issues had Fiat, another Italian maker, in an offer that would ensure the workers would have an Italian owner, take over. The deal also brought yet another Italian company, Lancia, into the family, with the deal finalised in 1986.
