Chrysler as an automotive maker can trace its history to 1904. An ailing Maxwell Motor Company had been sent Mr Walter Chrysler in the 1920s to help reorganise and rebuild the struggling business. January 1924 saw the release of the first Chrysler car, known as the Chrysler 70.
Powered by a six cylinder engine it featured full internal lubrication and an oil filter at a time when most cars of the era did not.
For its time, the Chrysler company was noted for many innovations. A rim on a wheel to hold in a rubber tyre, the first mass produced four wheel hydraulic brakes and rubber engine mounts are amongst them.
1928 had the birth of different divisions of Chrysler. Designed to appeal to different market segments on price, Plymouth and DeSoto were for the entry level and mid-level buyers. Soon after, Chrysler bought the Dodge Brothers truck and automobile company.
Yet another brand was created in the 1930s, with the famous MoPar name coming into being. Literally a mix of Motor Parts, this was simply for vehicle parts to fit Chrysler vehicles and soon became known as an overall colloquialism for the company’s cars.
In the first decade of the 21st Century there were Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler brands. 998 had seen Daimler-Chrysler, and would prove to be a short lived partnership. Chrysler is now part of what is called FCA, or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, covering Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, and Ram Trucks.
