It’s one of the world’s oldest car brands and identifiably Italian. Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, or ‘Italian Automobiles Factory, Turin’, was born in July of 1899. Giovanni Agelli, one of the founders, had met Count Emanuele Cacherano the year before. The Count had been looking for investors to build “horseless carriages”. An entrepreneur, Agnelli paid $400 for his share of the founding group.
The first factory opened in 1900 and with a staff of just 34 produced 24 cars. Just six years later the firm had built 1149 vehicles and were quickly gaining a reputation for the creativity and talent of the engineering staff. 1906 also had a Fiat dealership open in Manhattan with the first vehicle exported to the US in 1908.
Success came quickly to Fiat, with 1910 having the company listed as the largest automobile company in Italy. There was also the building of a factory in Poughkeepsie, New York. Cars were sold at the then astronomical sum of $4000, compared to a Ford Model T at $825. This though had the cars and company being seen as one to buy for that social standing distinction.
Building commenced in 1922 for Fiat’s largest car making plant, which began production a year later, and was the first Fiat factory to follow an assembly line process. During the second world warFiat also produced aircraft, including the G55.
On 29 January 2014, it was announced that Fiat S.p.A. (the former owner of Fiat Group) was to be merged into a new Netherlands-based holding company called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and took place before the end of 2014.
