2024 Fiat Abarth 500e

I absolutely love the little 2024 Abarth 500e.  This is the car that makes EV sense.  It’s a perfect car for the city congestion or urban commute.  There are no emissions present with this one, so the 500e is making life breathe a little easier in the concrete/high-tech jungle.

It’s as cute as a butterfly but will sting like a bee when provoked, the Abarth 500e is a fun hatch.  In fact, this is one of the most fun EVs out there.  Especially when dressed in bright yellow, the 2024 Abarth 500e looks as cute as a bee with its black leather/suede Alcantara interior adding to its bee-like appearance.  Thinking about stings – right bang smack in the middle of the steering wheel is one of the coolest logos you’ll find on a car.  The gold scorpion emblem is quite the showpiece!

How brisk is the new Abarth 500e?  Powering the Abarth 500e is a 114 kW/235 Nm front electric motor and a 42 kWh battery.  This ensures the little car is good for a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.0 seconds and is definitely capable of putting smiles across our faces.  A bit more about the handling: The Abarth’s decision to run with a smaller battery pack is the right call to make for this little hatch, as the Abarth’s relatively light weight contributes agreeably to what is a rare EV that is genuinely fun to drive quickly.  It weighs in at around 1400 kg, so it’s a weight that contributes to a nimbleness befitting the car’s character.  Oh, and the car’s small dimensions make it a complete doddle to park.

For peace of mind, the two Abarth 500e models come with a 3-year warranty.  But, there is one point of contention I have about the car: its claimed driving range, which, according to European WLTP lab testing, is only 252 km at best.  But if you’re only running in and out of town for the half-hour work commute or across town for your hair cut appointment, then the Abarth 500e will be perfect.  The car’s top speed is 155 km/h.

Standard safety features include things like autonomous emergency braking, automatic headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a sleepy driver detection system, and even traffic sign recognition.

Inside the 2024 Abarth 500e cabin the style and materials present is very nice and attractive on the eye.  There are scorpion logos on the headrests and foot pedals, just to make more of a sporty statement.  The front seats are roomy and comfortable, with plenty of side support for when you test just how good the Abarth-tuned suspension really is – and the car hangs on really well in the corners.  Rear seat space is tight, but fine for two kids under the age of twelve.  There are just the two seatbelts in the back seats.  And, being a tiny hatch, the Fiat Abarth 500e works hard to provide a handy bit of space (185 litres) for the shopping bags behind the rear seats.  Fold the rear seats flat, and the space grows to 550 litres.

Right at the centre of the dash is a sweet 10.3-inch touchscreen that’ll keep you well connected with the outside world.  This is a useful infotainment system, whether it be for satellite navigation, Bluetoothing for phone calls, wireless Spotify connection – thanks to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay for music, or for those details on your next hotel destination or plane ticket.  The digital driver’s display is clear and classy.  A few tweaks have been made to this new system, including a new performance tab that displays real-time power and torque information, as well as some racier instrument cluster graphics, still remaining intuitive to use.

You can choose between two trims for the Fiat Abarth 500e: Turismo and Scorpionissima.  It’s hard to tell the difference between the two models – oh, that’s right – compared to the 500e Turismo, the 500e Scorpionissima is available exclusively with a choice of Acid Green or Poison Blue paintwork, paired with unique ‘Abarth’ decals on its sides (so the decals are black on green cars, and white on the blue cars).  The rest of the equipment and features are identical.

If I were to go electric, this is the car I’d go for.  To heck with a Tesla, this is an EV that still puts a lot of emphasis on the driver’s experience.  The 2024 Abarth 500e is a bright dinky barrel of fun – as any Abarth model should be.

The 2024 Abarth 500e model series includes the:

  • 500e Turismo
  • 500e Scorpionissima
