Would you like to own one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cars? It’s a medium-sized five-door, five-seat hatchback with comfortable seating and superb ride comfort.
What ensures that the Citroen C4 HDi EGS keeps Toyota’s Prius honest is found in the way it only emits 120g/km of CO2. The C4 HDI EGS delivers an official combined economy figure of around 5.0 litres/100km. The mid-sized Citroen has 81 kW to play with, and the efficient turbo-diesel has a very well coordinated six-speed transmission with an electric clutch for smooth progression.
Jump inside the Citroen C4 HDi EGS cabin and, like other C4 Citroens, the interior is a very pleasant place to spend some time on the road. All occupants can enjoy comfortable seating, fabulous leg room, electric windows, a great audio sound, air conditioning and a very well muted cabin that remains free from intrusive road noise and wind whistles. Cruise control and steering wheel buttons are a nice and useful addition, and the driver can get pleasantly comfortable with a very manoeuvrable seat and steering wheel set up.
The Citroen C4 HDI EGS is a very safe car, and holds the five star safety award from ENCAP test results. The C4 has a strong occupant safety shell with state-of-the-art restraint systems that include dual stage airbags, belt pre-tensioners and load limiters, seat mounted side airbags and a head protecting curtain airbag. An intelligent seat belt reminder operates for the driver and rear seat passengers.
On the road, the chassis is very nicely balanced, and the steering response and feedback very nice. There is a little body roll in the corners, but the ride comfort is outstanding. Anyway, you don’t buy one of these cars to set the fastest lap times in. When you pull up at the lights, the transmission disconnects completely when you are stopped. Drive reconnects itself very efficiently when you set off again.
The Citroen C4 makes the most of the 81 kW and never feels lacking in get-up-and go. Swinging past slower traffic, who are travelling at 90 km/h, with the power nice and full right through to 140 km/h is a formality.
This is an excellent car for the long haul. It remains very comfortable after three hours at the wheel, which in my book is a good judge of how relaxing a car actually is. And don’t forget; it’s frugal too.
