With similarities in the visual department to a Maserati, the Fiat Punto was always going to look good. Add to that the T-Jet engine and you’ve got a recipe for some rather serious excitement.
The steep, raking nose and the wrap-around headlights closely resemble the Fiat Punto’s cousin: the Maserati Grand Turismo. With a waist that is high, and very little overhang at either end of the car, the overall appearance of the Fiat Punto is that of speed and sportiness. Elegant alloys add to the pleasant Italian exterior, and a striking feature of the car’s design are the tall slim tail lights that run through to nearly the roofline. A set of 17-inch alloy wheels, colour matched spoilers and side skirts, and a chrome finish on the exhaust pipes sends a clear message to other road goers that this is a Fiat with spirit.
The Fiat Punto 1.4 T-Jet is the fastest Punto version in Australia at the moment, though there are whispers that the Abarth model may make it to these shores. The 1.4 litre turbo engine is a strong engine that accelerates quickly and strikes with plenty of punch that enables the enthusiast to enjoy a 0-100 km/h time of just 8.9 seconds. Performance and economy work in unison at Fiat, so you can expect the Fiat Punto 1.4 T-Jet to be highly efficient. An average combined fuel figure of 6.6 litres/100 km is a small price to pay for the Fiat’s sprightly performance. The new Fiat engine is a light pressure turbocharged version of the 1.4 litre Star-Jet engine that arrived at the launch of the little Fiat Punto. With a low inertia turbo added into the mix, the power is lifted from 57 to 88 kW and torque from 115 to 206 Nm. The beauty of this engine is that the amazing 200 NM is available from just 1700 rpm. The Punto is cleaner and more economical than any of its key rivals with only 155 g/km of carbon dioxide emitted.
With power down on the road the car feels agile and in control. Plenty of grip provides the driver with confident cornering, and the front-wheel-drive chassis soaks up the road bumps well. The combination of good handling and low-down torque makes it possible to cover the ground very quickly in the sporty little Fiat Punto 1.4 T-Jet.
The Punto range provides five-star EuroNCAP crash protection thanks to front, side and curtain airbags. And at just over 4 metres long, the Punto packs the largest interior space in its class too. Comprehensively well equipped in all areas, the Fiat Punto 1.4 T-Jet also has some premium features that include: ABS brakes with ESP stability control, ASR/MSR, a Hill Holder device, follow-me-home lights for personal security, sports seats, a leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, power steering, electric windows and mirrors, cruise control, air conditioning and a remote central locking with remote boot release.
You get a superb driving experience for a super price, and thus the Fiat Punto 1.4 T-Jet offers fantastic value.
