In standard costume the Mazda 3 is quite a car. Add some upgrades here and there, and a high performance engine, and you have a potent blend of awesome excitement. This year’s Mazda 3 MPS is stunning.
A drive will have you appreciate just how quick the new Mazda 3 MPS actually is. A claimed 0-100 km/h time of a smidgeon over six seconds is right on the money. The way the car streaks over the tarmac is shown in its performance credentials. With 2.3-litres of menacing madness, the Mazda 3 MPS has a huge level of torque available in the mid range – which makes it awesomely fast at overtaking. 380 Nm of torque is available at, bang on, 3000 rpm. The car’s peak power of 190 kW is sourced at 5500 rpm. Add a six-speed manual gearbox and you really, really move.
Mazda has the 3 MPS fitted with big ventilated disc brakes all round, taut MacPherson struts at the front, and a nicely balanced multi-link suspension at the rear. Low profile, 225 tyres on 18-inch alloys complete the sporty package.
Figure-hugging seats with nice side and lumbar support, a chunky multi-tasked steering wheel fits nicely in the hands and controls a number of items in the car – like cruise control and audio functioning. The dials and dash surfaces are nicely trimmed with chrome over a quality black plastic to give a real sense of cohesion, clarity and beauty.
The Mazda 3 MPS has all the premium luxury items like Bluetooth communications, dual-zone airconditioning, a multi function onboard comuter with an information display, cloth/leather upholstery, multi adjustable front seats, smart keyless entry and a push-button engine start to name a few. This is a car that you are going to enjoy.
Hot, hot, hot! Three times over, and then some. The awesomely good Mazda3 MPS is a thrilling drive, and I think one that has been very understated in the automotive world. I liken the Mazda3 MPS to a sheep in wolf’s clothing. This is a car that has an incredibly powerful engine that is oh…so smooth and responsive.
The body style is fun and fresh, and keeps the car looking a million bucks alongside some of its competitor’s smart wares. The body kit package boasts aerodynamic bumpers, a rear roof spoiler, side skirts and an aggressive sports grille. The bonnet scoop means business, and the Mazda3 MPS has the design, flair and attention to detail that captures an onlooker’s eye with its smooth appearance and sporty overtones.
The hatchback design is exceptionally practical and boasts four doors (not two), making the cabin easily accessible and quite roomy for a car of this size. I can picture a young, glamorous woman or a handsome businessman at the wheel of the Mazda3 MPS. Any discerning driver who fits into any age group will appreciate the Mazda’s all round prowess. The interior is fashionable and has beautiful touches of chrome detailing, leather and colour tones. The chunky, leather wrapped gear shift knob and steering wheel along with a suave dash design make the Mazda3 MPS one of the best looking and best laid out sporty drives around. I love the elegant chrome-kissed dials and electronic gadgetry that is tastefully highlighted. A Mazda3 MPS is a very well equipped car and comes with loads of luxury items found in cars of a much higher price bracket. Air-conditioning (dual-zone climate control), a centre armrest console that is sliding and includes a tray, cruise control, a multi information display with an ambient temperature gauge, Bluetooth technology, a maintenance monitor, satellite navigation and a trip computer, a power adjustable driver’s seat, leather/cloth seat trim, smart keyless entry and a funky push-button engine start, an AM/FM tuner with CD player, an in-dash 6-disc player (MP3/WMA compatible) boasting six speakers, auxiliary inputs, Bluetooth audio (MP3 player compatible), a steering wheel with mounted audio controls, active head restraints (front), airbags SRS: front (driver and passenger), side airbags (front) and curtain airbags (front and rear). This is a real competitive package!
Take the Mazda3 MPS out to a favourite piece of twisting road, and the chassis excels. The balanced feedback and tenacious grip is outstanding. No surprises when the swift ZOOM – ZOOM Mazda3 MPS comes with excellent ABS, EBD, EBA, DSC, TCS and Limited -Slip Differential technology that is torque-sensing. This little beauty has a very zesty 2.3 litre Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) turbocharged in-line 4 – cylinder, 16 valve DOHC engine rated at 190 kW at 5500 rpm. And the maximum torque level of 380 Nm at 3000 rpm is addictive. The Mazda3 MPS has hooked up to a very slick six-speed manual gear shift which is so light to operate and quick to use. The combination of power and chassis balance is incredible, making the title of “Family Sport hatch” well and truly a given for this very fine car.
