Zipping into supermarket car parks or garden shop cafes is great fun but if the car is a dog to park, then the outing can become quite a palaver. Town driving in the all new Nissan Almera is well sorted. Gliding in and out of a car park is easy with the Almera’s light and responsive steering, and vision is excellent. A comfy, roomy interior and supple suspension make the new Nissan Almera relaxed about town and great for commuting on the open road.
Being an accomplished about-town car means you need to be complete in all the right areas, and the Nissan Almera certainly achieves here. However, the cleverly designed cabin and handy luggage space means that the Almera can become a decent open-road commuter for all the family or for the business car-pools, too. At home on the motorway, the small Almera sedan comes with the superb efficiency of a four-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine that can gobble up the miles without drinking heavily. While the Nissan Almera feels like a big car on the inside, it offers the fuel economy of a small car – with a combined fuel economy figure of just 6.3 litres/100 km for the five-speed manual models. Keeping up legally is easy enough, with the small sedan having an eager 75 kW of power and 139 Nm of torque to motor along country roads. The Almera’s chic styling is sporty and handsome, but the aerodynamic streamlining ensures that the car slips through the air silently.
Likeable looks start with a cheerful face, and the sedan’s rounded roofline and tapered back end is tastefully finished for added charm. High rear taillights run over the Almera’s haunches in a bold tomato-coloured vividness, while a strong waistline adds strength to the fresh new Nissan Almera design.
Amiable seats make travelling in the Nissan Almera very comfortable, indeed. An amazing level of head and shoulder room in the rear of the car is excellent and rival cars that are medium-sized. Cloth trim is plush and hardwearing, while there are all sorts of large handy spaces to put travel items into. If you have young ones travelling with you, then the storage pockets and compartments will be your best mate.
Rounded dials match the rounded dash curves, and the nice touches of grey-on-black provide a smart environment for the traveller. Blue illumination for the flawless speedometer and rev counter dials is classy, while many of the car’s on-board features are very easily accessed at arm’s length on the dash. All models feature the convenience of a Bluetooth handsfree phone system that allows you to answer and end calls safely while travelling on the road. Nissan’s Almera Ti boasts climate control air-conditioning, so there’s going to be cool heads inside the Ti on any hot Australian day.
Nissan has given the Almera top safety features, and each model has driver and front passenger SRS front and side impact airbags, along with front to rear curtain SRS airbags that will help protect occupants in the event of a big accident. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) senses if your vehicle starts to lose grip on the road and will act accordingly to help you maintain control. ABS, BA and EBD work actively to enhance driver control, even in the most demanding emergency stop.
Two Nissan Almera equipment levels are available. The standard Nissan Almera ST has plenty of comfort features, while the Ti adds a few more. Air-conditioning, a four-speaker audio with MP3 connectivity and a player auxiliary jack, Bluetooth, and steering wheel audio and Bluetooth controls feature in the ST. However, a four-speed automatic, 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, a rear spoiler, Rear Park Assist, intelligent keyless entry, a push button start, variable intermittent wipers, climate control air-conditioning, a rear centre armrest with integrated cup-holders and rear adjustable headrests are the standout extras on the Ti models.
