Crisp detailing and a clean dash design make the all new Proton Preve a classy proposition for the new car buyer who wants to spend as little as possible for a comfortable and roomy small hatch. The very fact that the Proton Preve provides a great alternative for someone who wants to save dollars, head away from the mainstream Toyotas, Hondas and Mazdas, and still have a car that’s equipped with new technology shows that some cars are just overpriced.
The tidy Proton Preve design is simple and modern. Curves are the name-of-the-day, and the aerodynamic shape should give even a slippery Honda Civic a good run for top drag-coefficient honours. An agreeable crease line that runs the length of the high waistline accentuates the Preve’s good looks and sporty character. Smart LED headlights and 16-inch alloys look the goods, and a stylish chrome band joins the headlights, the PROTON emblem and air-intake grille to give a distinct look of a bird ascending.
Enter the Proton Preve 1.6 MT Executive and 1.6 CVT Executive models and fresh style sets the spacious interior off nicely. Cloth trim seats are very comfortable, and the rear seat has a fold down rear seat armrest that doubles as cup-holders. A padded console between the front seats has excellent storage space while offering support for the driver and front passenger’s elbows. Storage space on all four doors and a large glove box in the dash means that the Proton Preve is designed for being exceptionally practical, too. It’s amazing what you can hide away in these areas. If any of you have had kids, then the space for wet wipes, bottles, eats and tissues is first-rate.
Out to the boot: Space for luggage is excellent. A 508 litre void is ready for filling with whatever necessary items you care to take along for the ride. If you’re into golf, the boot space swallows a couple of golf bags and accessories easily, thanks to the handy height and width.
With every new model, it seems there is always some new feature to explore. With a brand new Proton Preve Executive, a push start-button, an auto rain sensor feature and in-car internet access via Proton’s Yes 4G WiFi system means there will be lots of play time ahead for new Preve Executive owners. Follow Me Home lighting and a handy sound system are nice touches to finish the car off. Satellite navigation can be added as the car comes with the necessary technology.
To stay in the game, new cars have to comply to the demands of picky consumers and rigid safety tests. The new Proton Preve has a Reinforced Safety Structure (RESS) that not only resists high impacts well but the excellent torsional rigidity and strength is light, helping the Prevé return excellent fuel efficiency. The frame consists of twelve key components that are forged using the hot press process for high-tensile strength. The result is superior protection from front, side and rear impacts. Front and side airbags, Electronic Brake Distribution, Electronic Stability Control, Brake Assist and Traction Control are standard items that you can check off your safety list.
Both the Proton Preve 1.6 MT and 1.6 CVT models have the frisky 80 kW, 1600cc engine. MT stands for the five-speed manual, while CVT stands for the six-speed CVT option. A nice smooth CVT operation offers seamless gear changes and excellent fuel economy. Manufacturer figures claim a healthy 5.8 litres/100 km for the CVT and 6.2 litres/100 km for the manual mode. Tidy road holding and a grippy chassis make for good on road dynamics, and the suspension copes very well with undulating city streets. There is a more powerful Proton Preve 1.6 CVT Premium model. Plenty of buyers will see the sense in buying the cleverly designed Proton Preve. I like the cars nippy acceleration, comfort and practicality. Oh, and Proton have given the Preve a lengthy five year/100,000 km warranty…now you can’t gripe over that one!
